Hannah's voice is one that we need to hear, and what she says is both deeply meaningful, and tolerant - or kind, as she might put it - at the same time. My wife just finished reading Nanette, and we have been close watchers of Hannah Gadsby for a number of years now. Long may she hold the stage!
Her comedic character is playing a parody of a form of ironic humour which used to be cutting edge, albeit many years ago. This makes her quite lame...
Hannah is a wonderful beautiful human being whom should be invited to speak at every university. In this world of hate, ignorance, and hypocrisy Hannah provides clarity from experience and bravely challenges you to be kind and compassionate to all. Who do you want to be? Thank you Hannah!
My favorite Renaissance Woman! Being that she’s THE one and only Renaissance Woman. Where has the RW series gone? I want more … WE want more. If only old Mrs. Weaver, who called us people, had even been slightly similar to Hannah. One class she addressed us as “people” 28 times in 45 minutes. As in, “People, this is a painting by ZzhOhtoh, who painted Hannah Gadsby’s favorite nativity scene … “ Ah, if only Mrs. Weaver had been even a tiny bit like Ms. Gadsby.
Her act is to attack comedy, it's for intellectual liberals to call post-comedy. Gadsby seeks to show how feeble jokes are at representing her pain and trauma under toxic masculinity. And that a post-comedic representation of her oppression is much more liberating than comedy. You have to remember she's autistic. She's only capable of talking about herself. Jokes are really a shared way of making life better. She doesn't get that sharing, doesn't get jokes, sees them as limiting and toxic. So she attacks toxic masculinity by abandoning its joke format and talking about her history of abuse and misery. Of course she'd be a shit comedian if that's all she wanted to be. My point is her autistic SWJ act isn't funny, deliberately.
Gadsby is a bloody inspiration. It is said comedians are modern Philosophers. The more I hear Gadsby talk, the more impressed. I am happy to be her contemporary.
I find it abhorrent that this woman was kicked to the curb in life and now that she's got money and fame, all a sudden, they sing a different tune. I'll tell ya, she's got more forgiveness in her than I do! Her story just emphasizes what society sees as worthy and legitimate: wealth and fame. But the virtue in her was present in her during her unfortunate beginnings when she was being molested, abused and raped. But the world shut her out then because they could and continues to shut out people with good minds because the world continues to see (in Hannah's own words,) that their "potential will never equal" those with power, fame and a high class platform.
Her book "Ten Steps to Nanette" is a masterpiece of thought provoking stories all leading to her dramatic show "Nanette". Who she is, how she came to write "Nanette" and how it sits in Australia and particularly Tasmania's story is all woven through the astonishing way she sees, feels, hears and breathes. An absolutely compelling read.
Hannah, you are absolutely amazing! We all need you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart as a mother of two amazing, lovely autistic, intelligent, ADHD sons who the world does not know how to benefit from.
Well there you go! WOW 🤩 I knew you would step into your true power girl to help others who have been suppressed to find their true power 😉 Well done 👍🏻🥰
@ 9:14 - "...and that's how homophobia was politicized and weaponized...and it was a trick...the trick being the harvesting of hate, amongst a depressed low socio-economic demographic who were already struggling against intergenerational poverty, dependency, and a criminally low literacy level."
What a wonderful, inspiring, thoughtful, & funny commencement address. Good on you, @University of Tasmania for inviting @Hannah Gadsby. I hope the students realize what a gift this was.
