Ponto is the name of a dog in Charles Dickens' book "The Pickwick Papers." Ponto sees a sign saying "Gamekeeper has orders to shoot all dogs found in this inclosure” and won't pass, despite being called by his master from the other side - a story then told to show how clever Ponto was. It's on Proj Gutenberg: search in Pickwick Papers for Ponto, and there's even an illustration of Ponto baulking at the sign. Hence the "What is your fear?" question.
