2:10... After the called strike here to run the count to 0-2, look at the upper right portion of the screen. Three guys sitting together all stand up and begin to leave thinking that the game is definitely over with a pitcher up and an 0-2 count. Obviously, the three men didn't make it out of the stadium before hearing the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd realizing that Camp had connected for a game-tying home run. I wonder if they sat back down to continue watching the game? Probably. Baseball... what a game! ⚾️ 🧢
Recall watching the begining of that game with my grandfather. and him telling me what happened about how it ended the next morning . And reading about it in the paper
As fun as these games might to be to watch, (especially if you don't have anything to do the next day) they make the case all by themselves for calling games after 12 innings, calling it a tie and moving to a point system in the standings. Because it's really bad for the players, especially the pitchers and catchers. But they're great to watch at the ballpark and on TV. This is perhaps the most memorable game at Atlanta Fulton Stadium, at least in the regular season.
"Ernie, if he hits a Home Run to tie this game... 😂⚾ I suppose that was the most unexpected HR in Baseball history, what were the odds that guy would do that ? Is there an actuary in the audience ???
Tom Gorman gave up that embarrassing home run, but he got the win and Camp was the losing pitcher after giving up 5 runs the next inning. Guess that dinger went to his head.
Classic game indeed! Unfortunately with the implementation of the rule change putting a runner on 2nd base automatically we will never see such types of games again. Truly 😞 sad.
I watched this game with my Grandma (who was a Braves fan since they were in Boston). I was supposed to leave at 7am on July 5 to go to my new college (was 18, fresh out of high school) for orientation. I kept saying "Grandma I need to get some sleep." and Grandma was like "it'll be over soon." After the game, they still have the fireworks (remember July 4th) and televised it as well. I never did go to sleep that night. Drove two hours to college, checked into my room for the weekend and fell asleep. Ended up missing half of the Friday activities. LOL
This is why there should be no ghost runners, and why pitchers should be allowed to hit. It's more authentic. Say all you want about it being "less entertaining", but now having the universal DH and ghost runners, I still hear many complaints about baseball being boring.
My brother and I along with his friends were going fishing that morning so we got a total of one hour sleep and never stopped talking about it for hours. Great memory.
I wasn't there, but I do have a Rick Camp signed baseball on my shelf. I was 5 at the time, and I really wish the Braves would bring back those red, white, and blue uniforms at least during part of the season!
IDK what's crazier.....this or Mitch Williams GW double at 4:40 AM where I snuck into the Vet at 1am after seeing the movie "The Firm" on the 2nd leg of a DH after an eternal rain delay.
at 2:32, which Met is that? It hink the 2B. It looks like he smiles. I'd love to know what he said to Rick, but probably "Are you kidding me Rick?" or "it's 3 in the frickin morning Rick!"
Thats what those JACKASSES get for waving everybody in acting like a bunch of Little Leaguers when the short skinny kid came up to bat....F#ck em......
I remember watching this game on WTBS. I stayed up as late as I could then went to bed. I listened to some of it on the radio. When I woke up I found out later that morning who won what a crazy extra innings game.
believe it or not,Camp had another chance to be a hero, but he struck out to end the game-at 4:30am and woke up the city of Atlanta with a fireworks show!
One of the most memorable games my Dad and I watched together on TV. Very long rain delay, Rick Camp hitting that miracle shot in the 18th keeping the game alive. The stadium still firing off the fireworks after 3:30 am and hearing news the next day of people calling the Police to ask if we were being bombed by Russia. What a game!
