It would have been better to include the technical criticism about working with income measures, from sociology, and how this research line was developed first in sociology since mid 60s, developed empirically later on using complex log linear models. Durlauf just ommited it. PS: all "econometric" models, including thouse that deals with causality, were developed by statisticians, psycologist and other social scientist, not by economist ;) What economist would think if sociologist keep naming statistical models like " sociometric" models ? ;)

For people wondering "didn't anyone study psychological traits prior to 2000? (or 2014). Or use SEM? or look for genes?", there are many thousands of papers from researchers who assembled large genetically-informative samples, and phenotyped them for high-quality psychological and behavioural measures, and built the statistical tools (alongside people like Jöreskog) to test the structure of these traits in complex multi-group structural models. Google Linden Eaves, Mike Neale, Nick Martin, Dorrett Boomsma, Hans Eysenck, John Loehlin...). Gene finding has also been under way for many years, taking off with the advent of ultra-large sample sizes and ultra-dense variation measures in the 2000s. Exciting times, and building on a depth of behavioral data in twin studies. For instance, beginning around the mid 70s, evidence for the heritability of educational outcome began to be established: scholar.google.co.uk/citations?view_op=view_citation&hl=en&user=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ&cstart=1400&pagesize=100&sortby=pubdate&citation_for_view=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ:Ak0FvsSvgGUC The heritability of many other behaviors from diet to self control has also been under study within psychology and behavior genetics for 40 years. To grab just a quick couple: scholar.google.co.uk/citations?view_op=view_citation&hl=en&user=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ&cstart=1100&pagesize=100&sortby=pubdate&citation_for_view=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ:oursBaop5wYC scholar.google.co.uk/citations?view_op=view_citation&hl=en&user=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ&cstart=1400&pagesize=100&sortby=pubdate&citation_for_view=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ:t7izwRedFcYC Many other traits also, for instance sexual preferences: scholar.google.co.uk/citations?view_op=view_citation&hl=en&user=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ&cstart=1400&pagesize=100&sortby=pubdate&citation_for_view=Ba2kwtkAAAAJ:AYInfyleIOsC

Why not just call it perseverance? Serious question is it just to be catchy?
@kevincurrie-knight3267
@kevincurrie-knight3267 8 лет назад
From what I know of grit, the answer is because perseverance is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for grit. Grit, as Duckworth defines it, also requires some sort of passion. So, if I am learning biochemistry in order to satisfy a college requirement but have little interest in it, and I persevere through the course, that isn't per se enough to keep me motivated outside of the extrinsic reward of my grade. What Duckworth is interested in is the type of perseverance that happens when one is also passionate about what one is doing such that extrinsic motivators either matter little or not at all toward one's willingness to persevere.

Personality traits are very slightly dynamic. There are a few large variables one of which is the general human condition. I notice a large similarity among all the worlds cultures from an Afghani tribes member to an American city dweller. Most people are more static then dynamic if you compare those on opposite ends of the spectrum. I do think that many of the "resiliency" traits, especially intelligence (real intelligence to include creativity and original thinking, oppose to standard IQ tests), allows for a more open door into being dynamic. We tend to mimic quite well until we're comfortable into a pigeon hole we get forced (willingly kind of) into. A sociopath (narcissistic) can become way more dynamic. This, I believe is due to their ability to detach their conditioning from their actions just enough to apply some logic and by nature apply internal cognitive behavioral therapeutic changes from that inter reasoning. By the way I also hate that research on NPD (relating to current generations) I think it's entirely bull shit. You sound smart. The overwhelming majority of those working in the fields relating to psychology are dumb as fuck, and I mean borderline retarded dumb. Its sad too because its not the lower level workers, its an epidemic at the top research levels and trickles down and effects the normal people in communities.

Salman Khan of Khan Academy has said that their format is great because teachers can measure persistence of students over time. Plus, it allows students to learn at their own pace. This allows for much higher efficiency than lectures, and it's a lot more fun.

Please stop thinking about averages only!!!! It makes no sense from a statistical point of view to speak about averages when the true distribution of the event in question (risk aversion) in the whole population isn't known!!!!! Please stop it!
