This song is actually an English "Soldier's" song from the Franco-Indian Wars with different lyrics but which became immensely popular during the Peninsula Campaign in the Napoleonic Wars.
I'm pretty sure most northern soldiers would be extremely disappointed in how most Northern cities are crime infested in 2024. I feel so bad for all those that died in the civil war for our cities to look like what they do today. So sad.
Alexander was among the best Artillery commanders on both armies. Gettysburg was a confluence of strange circumstances and luck. While I would not presume to Lee's thinking, he was clearly not in a condition he was accustomed to. Jackson gone, Longstreet disagreeing with the plan made before crossing the Patomic. Meade was a great general and did well for only being in command a short while.
The Union army suffered 12,653 casualties (1,284 killed, 9,600 wounded, 1,769 captured/missing). The Confederate army lost 5,377 (608 killed, 4,116 wounded, 653 captured/missing) - Wikipedia.
My great great uncle was a 1st Lt in the 14th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. He helped evacuate Gen. Jackson after he was shot. For some reason, the stretcher used to carry him off the field, which still has blood on the cloth fragments that remains, is on display at Gettysburg.
Picketts charge was a VERY BAD decision. I was there in1999. The Angle...that little copse of trees is still there where the confederates were headed...an IMPOSSIBLE GOAL over open ground. General Lee was delusional.
Nice compilation of the glory of the US Cavalry winning the west. In my opinion the best scene for The Girl I Left Behind Me was in the Glory Guys when the officers of the regiment were leaving the fort and their wives and girlfriends behind.
When you are fighting to KEEP SLAVERY, you're bound to eventually lose. They should have known that slavery is immoral. The Bible approves of slavery, so the Bible was the underlying problem.
Say, darkies, hab you seen de massa, wid de muffstash on his face Go long de road some time dis mornin', like he gwine to leab de place? He seen a smoke way up de ribber, whar de Linkum gunboats lay; He took his hat, and lef' berry sudden, and I spec' he's run away! CHORUS: De massa run, ha, ha! De darkey stay, ho, ho! It mus' be now de kindom coming, an' de year ob Jubilo! 0:57 In the distance over long street's shoulder, you see an artilleryman come into view by that Canon limber. He only has two more seconds to live. He is then blown into the air with a Wilhelm scream!
0:42 that reflexive "damn!" By Longstreet is one of the most perfect micro moments of acting I've ever seen. So much is in it namely the fact that a young artillery Commander gave him a truth bomb about infantry tactics, namely, that the enemy would improve the fortifications on the top as time went on. Also , Knowing that many men would die as a result of those improved fortifications. third, the fact that this was not even longstreet's assault, he wanted to make. His orders from Lee gave him no choice.
Marching slowly against such a fortified position was suicidal. The Federals figured out they needed to rush it as fast as possible when they took Marye's Heights 6 months later when Sedgewick's men attacked it to go support Hooker at Chancellorsville.
Lee Thay that he was invincible and the south whould win God let the north win to abolish slavery in America and unite the country and preserve the union
Chamberlain was injured the second day and they never had the bullet removed. He died maybe after thirty years from that bullet. He could have been the last casualty of the war.
I believe General lee. Should have waited at least one more year two at the least. To stay in the south where you can be easily reinforced and recapplized. And then after the second year invade the north. When they were weak and unprepared. Either way God's plan is best. I personally wished. We have one the civil war. But only god knows best.
I haven't seen this series but its incredibly fascinating. Feel that this was a war which few were really prepared for with a learning curve everest steep. The same for the British & Commonwealth forces in WW1 to be honest. So its not surprising that fiascos like Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg happened.
