In conventional agriculture, you'll typically see farmers rotate between corn and soybeans. This means leaving the soil bare in the "off season". Bare soil is an extreme recipe for erosion. By planting a winter hardy cover crop in late fall after your cash crop is out, you're are greatly reducing your soil erosion and nutrient loss. The cover crop is then harvested prior to the start of the next cropping season. Then it it anaerobically digested to create renewable natural gas. The liquid and solid digestate can then be used as a soil amendment/fertilizer.
