Why are they so baffled at doctor offices when you ask for them to do a simple test like this? Compartmentalized idiots we usually call them now! We did this in high school. Now they get frustrated rude and say bs.
I like the idea of including food colouring, that's a great teaching trick to show the concentration gradient! I think my students sometimes struggle with visualizing this with a verbal explanation alone.
