Hello friends, long time… Been very busy with work and life the last few years but I did manage to capture some ferry horns over the course of 2022/2023. All videos were shot on my phone so my apologies for the slightly worse audio/visual quality, but it does the trick :)) Happy New Years to everyone and I wish you all a prosperous 2024 🎉
Grew up hearing this several times every day growing up on the east side of Port Angeles. This, the courthouse clock bell, and the whistle at Olympic Cleaners every a.m.
@@rarleyposting5546 can you explain? also outside, from how far way from the ship is the horn earsplitting loud? Where do you need earplugs? Isn't the sound level of the horn dangerously loud?
@@Spaceshotx7 When you’re inside, it’s quite muffled to the point where it won’t startle you; when you’re outside however, it’s quite loud, especially on the upper decks
The Spirit Class vessels(Spirit of BC & Spirit of Vancouver Island) have really quite horns for such large ferries. A nice comparison is at 1:57 when the Costal Celebration blows its horn, it’s horn is far louder than the Spirit of Vancouver Island when it blows it’s horn at 2:36 If you listen closely they make an announcement on the Coastal Celebration(probably warning passengers on the outside deck that the horn is about to sound). As for the Spirit of Vancouver Island, it’s horn is so quiet no warning announcement needed or given.
@@bcferriesman1438 I think that most of the time they use the quiet horn on the Spirit Class ships. I think the reason is due to noise complaints from people who live near Active Pass and it makes for a more comfortable ride if you aren't sounding a super loud horn. My guess is that the kahlenberg is only used in emergency situations or when there is enough fog that visibility is poor.
My guess is that the louder horn might be used in emergency situations, when visibility is poor or when someone is getting a tour of the bridge & is allowed to sound the horn.
I was on it May 9th of 2022 and took the Spirit of BC at 2:00 from Swartz Bay and they used the new horn. First time ever that I heard it. And I've taken the ship a lot of times. It might be random or for show if guests take a tour.
Nice video man! I found you through Instagram and must say it is a very nice video! Anyhow, I have subscribed to you and hope that you keep up the great work! Cheerio :) :)
