Last winter 22-23 me and my best friend Gavin took a trip to Vail. With 5 years of snowboard instructing on the east coast, we were confident in only what we knew. 2 riding days in and we were in good shape. With a guide on the mtn with us we explored our second to last day with our guide named Nick. After incrementally riding harder terrain, tomorrow gavin and I were on our own for a day. Knowing this I youtubed "vail Snowboarding" for some inspiration. Gavin and I were amazed at Sando"s hot feet. When we see Nick we ask him if we knows Sando. He said yes. Meeting Sando and riding with him is an experience i will never forget. At the time he was 59 compared to both of us being 20. Let me tell you, Sando smoked us i mean look at his videos. Hearing his stories and learning some things from him was a stepping stone for me. Thanks for reading. -Dukosaxony

Can you explain the utility of the drill that appears in the begging of the video?
@sando4444
@sando4444 3 года назад
Gabrel, there are 4 things a snowboard can do. It can be TILTed on toe or heel edge, it can be PRESSUREd to bend tip to tail, it can be TWISTed or TORQUEd with one foot pressing to toe edge and the other to heel. Or it can be PIVOTed. Of these four board performance concepts, TILT is used the most to turn or brake, by the average rider. The first drill is to isolate the PIVOT performance. If you can keep a rythym of pivot only, at first sitting completely still on a flat surface, then take it to a very slight incline, which is what I am doing here. Use a VERY Green run or even a flat catwalk to start. This drill is not as easy as it looks. The goal is to be able to turn or pivot the board anytime you wish, not just when you are able to unlock your upper body from being all twisted. I don't know if you see it, but I lead with my front hand, and time my arm leverage to be on the side which I am turning on. Most people drag their back hand and loose the ability to round both turns and be symmetrical on heel and toe.
@sando4444
@sando4444 3 года назад
If you look from 1:12 to 1:22 I use only Pivot and then Twist. Just after, I blend the two together, to attempt symmetrical and round heel and toe turns. It is SO F'n hard to do!! It takes focus on arm movements and their timing, and minimizing shoulder rotation, by focusing your eyes on a fixed object straight in front of you. Keep your chin up and give er a try. I would love to see some video of how it goes for you, if you wish me to do some movement analysis for ya?

@chrissandoski3800
@chrissandoski3800 9 лет назад
Ooops! completely wrong on that one. It is called "toe to toe". There is a "heel to heel" also, but it is WAY sketchy and the blindside spin I eluded to above, is the spin needed to get heel to heel. Learn that one slowly, or there are dues to pay!!!

Dues indeed! I crashed the other week and now have whiplash! Ouch... anyway, I'll still ride just taking it easy for a while... I can do them toe to toe but our slope doesn't have great snow and I think that would help... A LOT!

Hey Sando, very nice video! May I ask you what board are u using? I am an intermediate using a custom X so far, but with aging (43) I get tired quite quickly since the stiffness of the board, would you recommend a softer board for allround riding or is just a matter of practice? I ride 7-10 days a year, I was an hard booter (that is why a stiff board also for softies), then moved to softies almost 10 years ago, I like carving but would like to do some triks as well as the ones u show here.

@sando4444 4 года назад
So sorry it took all these years Edoardo. I ride several boards including the old Burton Floaters, and Canyons in 159cm up to 181cm. I am now also using the Custom X and it sounds like the stick YOU should be on. It is stiff at first, but you can break it in by bending it at home on carpet. Then, it will be soft enough. I hope I have been some kind of help?

So sorry it took 7 years to reply!! I am +15 or +12 with -3 or -6 on the back foot. No matter which angle you are at on the "back" foot, merely shift your hip above that foot and use femoral rotation for your steering mechanism.

Thanks for the heads up. I am in the eastern division. I hope to relocate west someday. Ive been fortunate enough to ride Utah and Idaho the past 2 seasons. Ive been watching a lot of videos trying to pick up on some things to work on this season. I like in your other video how you drag your downhill hand in some of your carved toeside turns. It looks like you raise and move your trailing arm opposite of the turn. It seems like this really keeps your shoulders square with the pitch.
