hey mab new subscriber here. did u install the updated timing chain tensioner to your audi? how's the updated tensioner looks & feels like? is it plasticky? how is it performing? would u recommend it? or stick with oem audi parts? tyia
I install the revised upper tensioner with each VW/Audi 2.0t that comes my way. I'm shocked the dealers aren't mandated to do so. I've installed Vaico and Borsehung branded tensioners with no problems. I used to be an OE original equipment only kind of guy. But after many negative experiences with both Audi and VW dealers, and VW USA corporate I won't pay unnecessary markups for metals and plastics.
Good question worth mentioning. I don't specify tool sizes because they're common. The oil filter wrench is 74.5mm. Overtime I will include more voice overs.
Yes, which was basically the problem to begin with, vw cheaped out on the timing chains by opting for cheap chinese chains and the result was prematurely stretching chains, it's not an easy job to replace and it's also something that is vital to your engine, so I'd suggest putting in a few bucks more to make sure you put in quality instead of making the same mistake vw did
Good but, loosen the oil filler cap before draining. Empty the first new oil container. Start the engine to fill new filter. Measure the oil level and, finally, top up to the correct level
Thanks for mentioning. Never thought to do that thinking oil would leak from the oil filter housing. I have an oil change coming up and will loosen the filter prior to draining and see what happens.
@@thehatchback2407 I think the gent meant the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Loosening it would allow for a shorter drain time, because, as the oil drains out, the volume is replaced by the air drawn through the oil filler neck.
Great question. Years ago I made the mistake of obsessively cleaning all the oil off the engine surfaces. When you do that every aluminum surface will oxidize and steel surface will rust. If you want to prevent the steel surfaces from rusting, like the bottom of the oil pan, coating the pan with oil will preserve the paint and metal, and appear new like it was just released from production. I like to coat all aluminum and steel surfaces, including nuts and bolts.
hey man thinking of getting this kit for 300 dollars with the sprocket. do you know if these are as good as the 450 dollar febi kit without the sprocket?
Judging from popular online euro parts sellers the Febi chains are the most common chains I see. I’m a casual driver so I wasn’t focused on performance or putting the pedal to the metal day to day. I was more interested in experimenting with lower cost but still reputable brands. I can’t claim from experience but my instinct wouldn’t recommend any kits costing less than the Borsehung option. In trying to answer your question there’s a lot to consider. From chains, to tensioners to guide rails. My perception of the kit offerings would be VAG, Febi then Borsehung. But that’s my perception and not based on actual testing. Chains rarely ever break, but they’ve all been shown to stretch. The lower tensioner Rev1 is reliable and could probably last the lifetime of the vehicle. The upper tensioner Rev1 is known to fail and should be replaced as quickly as possible with Rev2. The guide rail plastic grows brittle overtime so replacing them is good practice. My guess is most 2.0t enthusiasts are already aware of these things. Both Febi and Borsehung are reputable brand names but I don’t think they or VAG manufacture any chains. They simply put a stamping and or laser etching on them. Would I install this kit on another 2.0t of mine, without blinking yes. But am I also interested in comparing this with a Febi kit, yes so in 60k miles I’m gonna opt for the Febi chains, HT upper tensioner and VAG rails.
VW and Audi share the same 2.0t engines, even down to the engine codes. I don't know in fact if Borsehung is the OE supplier for the plastic rails, but overall the part quality appears high. Even down to the embossed markings on the parts. I was hesitant about the MORSE name on the chains because I couldn't find any information about the MORSE company. But so far after 5k miles the engine is running smoothly.
For many years I strictly used VAG or OE parts. But during the last several years I've found the markup of many VAG parts to be unnecessarily high. That, combined with VW's resistance to honor warranty claims has motivated me to support the OE and aftermarket suppliers directly. I still love my collection of VW and Audi cars but I will only purchase VAG branded parts if the price is reasonable.
