What really baffled me about the WH universe is that people widely accepted the existence of beings and demons outside the physical realm, is that not belief in the "supernatural"? But if there is hell and demons, shouldn't there also be paradise, God and angels? The emperor entirely avoided this fact, though. That's why humanity became such an abomination of itself.
Goddamn, incredible art and legendary voiceacting aside, whoever wrote the dialogue for this book did such an amazing job. The way that every single word uttered, every sentence spoken, every argument made during this exchange completely comes back to haunt the Emperor of Mankind is beyond words.
The emperors words are true and right. one day we will cast off the shackles of religion and belief in anything other than ourselves, and then we shall inherit the stars as we have been destined to do
I like to believe that Christians still exist in 40k, either as an underground religion keeping their heads down to avoid suspicion (and perhaps providing anonymous tips when they learn about gene stealer or chaos cults) or as an openly followed religion in that one independent human faction, the something dominate
Then the once secular Imperial Truth was turned on its head. The iterators who were once men of reason tasked with spreading secularism were turned into ecclesiastical priests who claim the Emperor a god.
Everything that Jeriah said to the emperor that his vision would only bring war, death and destruction he couldn’t have been more right. I wonder if the Emperor thought so too in the end.
The fact that every single society, tribe and group of people have created beliefs for themselves, proves the fact that belief is not just a desire but a need. Like food, sunlight and companionship. Belief feeds the soul like bread feeds the body. While others may use faith and beliefs to be cruel, far many more use it to conquer their fears, pain and suffering. The secular governments of the 21st century has proved this thoroughly, with genocides that have put to shame those of history.
"secular genocides" were terrible, but not worse than countless religious genocides. Also its possible that a faith is a need for many people and we won´t ever be able to get rid of it, but in the same way we probably won´t ever get rid of war, that shouldn´t stop us from dreaming about better, even if improbable future.
The character and motives of what it is to be human is in debate here. Both blame an outside source for some of man's wickedness, but neither addresses the root cause. What a fantastic story.
