It was their pre existing stress levels combined with being ridden by inexperienced riders/riders with an insufficiently established relationship with the horses in question. 1 of the unseated riders was trying to control TWO horses at the time of the incident.??? I have 40 years of many kinds of horsemanship behind me , and a horse has only attempted to bolt with me 3 times in 40 years - none of them unseated me or galloped blind for 6 miles on a hard unforgiving surface through a frightening environment for them. I am a competent but not extraordinary rider and I was not using the severe double bridles these soldiers used so ineffectively it seems. I used my experience my empathy and whatever relationship I had built with the individual horses in question, to calm/resolve the situation. The focus needs to be on assessing the quality of horsemanship of these riders - many of whom had NO experience with horses before serving a tour of duty in the household cavalry. That is no longer appropriate. A core of experienced and empathetic riders needs to be formed and retained, instead of a churn rate that destabilised horses in an already stressful environment. The stress levels in the horses and their environment needs to be externally and objectively assessed by an external interdisciplinary advisory group. The only cavalry activity that should be stopped altogether is the "Static" sentry duty done by two single horses in enclosed sentry stalls carrying at least 12 stone on concrete for at least an hour at a time, without the essential pain relief of movement. Horses stress levels go through the roof in such circumstances. RU-vid videos will attest to that.
