My name is Laura. I am hard of hearing (deaf in my left ear and slowly losing hearing in my right ear). I tried learning American Sign Language when I was a college freshman but really struggled accepting my hearing loss, and failed in the class miserably. Fall 2015 I decided to retake ASL 1. A combination of my own determination and an amazing teacher really made fall in love with the language. I want to continue learning and improving my skills! I just want to be immersed in Deaf culture. Now, I am at the end of ASL 2 and I have created this channel to continue practicing ASL.

Does single sided deafness has any impact during pregnancy and also does delivering baby lead to deafness in better ear ?

Interesting questions. To my knowledge, no it does not. I have never been pregnant so I cannot give any personal info regarding that. I am in school for audiology and have yet to learn about this. I could not find online any evidenced based information regarding your questions from legitimate sources. Some websites (not researched based) suggested that hormonal changes during pregnancy could cause: Tinnitus , Reduction in hearing, Pressure in ear, Otalgia, Secretion in ear, Otosclerosis, and Sudden sensorineural hearing loss. If you experience problems with your ears or hearing I would definitely see an Audiologist as they can provide more specialized tests and information over a primary care doctor.

But when i consulted an otologist for my test prescribed by the doctor, the otologist said that delivering child can also lead to partial hearing loss or complete deafness in my better ear. But when i asked for the same to my doctor he said it is something that should be considered later as i am 19 years old only and also no hearing aid can be useful for me as i am completely deaf in my left ear ......as per the doctor And also the reports showed that everthing in normal in my left ear. Nothing is damaged, every part of my left ear is completely well. Hence, he could not speculate how i got deaf in my left ear. Other doctor to whom i consulted for the same said that either the auditory nerve to the brain is weak or absent.

@@deeptidhillon1078 Very interesting, well if your doctor told you that, then I guess it is a possibility. I'll have to do more research. I was also told that no hearing aid would work for me my whole like. Technology has changed drastically in the hearing science world. In entering the audiology field I have learned that there are actually 2 options for us as single sided deaf individuals. I encourage you to look into them. Mind you these devices would not give you hearing in the deaf ear but would direct all sound on your deaf side to your good ear. I have been able to try both of them on fortunately to see how I like them. 1 device called the CROS www.phonak.com/us/en/hearing-aids/phonak-cros-II.html which I didn't really like personally. The other is a surgical option called the bone anchored hearing www.cochlear.com/us/en/home/products-and-accessories/baha-system I really want this one but cannot afford it. In the audiology office I was able to test this out on a head band and it was miraculous and brought tears to my eyes. When I tried the BAHA on I was instructed to plug my good ear while the audiologist whispered in my deaf ear. I could hear absolutely everything she whispered clear as day in my good ear even though it was plugged. This is possible because the sound travels through bone conduction to the good ear. I was sad because no doctor ever told me about these options before but I think it was because I grew up in a small town with not that many doctors and they just didn't know what new technology was out there. I encourage you to do some research and check out the links I included.

@@deeptidhillon1078As someone who is deaf in one ear since birth due to an auditory nerve failure, mine was due to a virus very common in pregnant women, known as CMV for short. Perhaps you experinced something similar?

Same experience - my mum gave me the phone, i automaticallyi put it on my left ear, she told me to put it on my right ear as that is the standard practice - my parents found out that day that i have SSD. 😁
