I'm not a cellist, but I always thought the Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante was the most difficult (though I guess technically not a concerto if it's not called that?)
Great video, just some notes For the first concerto violin students play, I'd put Oskar Rieding's violin concerto in B Minor. Apart from that, for the "Most Beautiful Pieces" section, I wouldn't put The Swan or Franck's sonata although that's purely subjective.
I'd argue that the Mendelssohn violin concerto is the most famous violin concerto. I think almost everyone have heard the opening of it. I think the same goes for Vivaldi's "Spring" from the four seasons.
even tho i am a cellist/bassist i would argue that haydn c is most comprable to mozart vln concerto 3 in g, even the emotion is similar (correct me if you disagree) also mendellson is probs more similar to something like elgar e minor, as it is more muscally complex and is learned later down the line
@@Leon-or4yk Mendelssohn is 100% not a student concerto, but it's definitely one of the "easier" concerto's. It's around in the middle so like from easy to hard it would go something like Vivaldi A minor concerto Kabalevsky // Accolay Violin Concerto Mendelssohn Tchaikovsky Sibelius Shostakovich No. 1 Paganini No. 1 (very summarized)
Why is Shostakovich technically easier than Dvorak. Saying this as an experienced cellist who has asked around and been told by other great cellists that Shostakovich is harder
I think Prokofiev’s musicality was way underrated… it’s true it does not have the same kind of appeal as some other pieces, given its often cubist, sarcastic, machine-like elements. But that’s also the charm of this concerto. Also great nomination of Barber, second mvt for me is to die for.
Nice list, Borodin 2 and Grieg 1 are my favourites here. If i add could add more, I would probably add Tchaikovsky 1 2nd movement, Bruch 1 2nd movement, Dvorak 13 2nd movement, Schubert 14(Death and the Maiden) 1st movement, and shostakovich 15. And I guess the bonus is Dvorak quartet 9 2nd movement right? (I'm a big Dvorak fan so I have heard this before)
One you neglected but which really ranks near the top (I like it much more than the Elgar) is the Finzi. It runs seriously deep and goes to 11/10 in musicality. Also worth consideration is the CPE Bach A minor. I am however very glad you included the Barber!
1. Tchaikovsky Rococo is not a concerto any more than Bruch's Kol Nidrei. 2. Kabalevsky and Walton and Boccherini and CPE Bach. 3. Dvorak's concertos aren't his best work. This cello concerto (one of two he wrote for the instrument) is the best but several works on this list (and perhaps a few that aren't) are far better.
