Comic Book Artist tips, tutorials, and general discussion about drawing comics. Penciling and inking comics is fun and challenging and I want to share some tips (and learn from you). I will focus primarily on "creator owned" comic book creation. I will share process videos, tutorials and tips about how I create comic books.
I'm David Pentecost and I'm a comic artist who is a Christ follower, husband and dad.
Great to see some options! I picked up one of these brush pens recently and I just loaded it for the first time today. I’ve been a little hesitant, worried that it might be hard to clean, but it’s so smooth and I’m glad I opened it up. Have you had any challenges with maintenance? I got an extra tip just in case but I’d still rather keep the current one as nice as I can for as long as I can.
If you mean the ink cartridges that come with the Pentel pocket brush, then yes you should be able to use it long-term. However I do think that eventually any ink will dry out and cause the pen to become clogged
@@davidpentecost that's great. I might buy this pen in future. I've been using a pental pocket brush pen for a while and I got some issues. It's bristles split too often and it's hard to control. Hatching is almost impossible with spilited bristles. Not to mention the refills are crazy expensive (I've watched your refill method and would try it soon, also please recommend me the ink I should use for refilling. I prefer waterproof inks) . Is there a fix to those bristles? I've recently started using a real brush for inkjng and damn.. it's literally the best inking tool ever
@@davidpentecost It's great to know and watch you paint.👍 When you switch to your own ink, did you clean the brush or just use the new ink straight on?
I like it, it's thin sure. I have 2. Don't forget the Japanese actually write with these pens on a daily basis. Business men probably asked for the thinness, shirt pockets being what they are. Their traditional writing instrument we just happen to find great for art.
I definitely agree it’s helpful to specify, but in the mean time, 7:26 if anyone in these comments is curious, looks like the JetPens page he showed is 800A. It’s at 7:26.
Some people just want to draw and have fun without going broke on items they don't really need ... 'ya know. Probably why companies make differing brush types at various costs.
Do you prefer the kuretake 13 to the Pentel Pocket brush? I use the Pentel all the time, its very difficult to consecutively do very fine lines with it, at lest for me. Can you please make a vid with how best to fine line with the Pentel Pocket brush, please
You may want to try the pentel fine brush pen the blue one it has a cosistant finer line and you can open the barrel and fill with your own black waterproof ink
As an up and coming I realize how hard it must be hand drawing your comics also I felt a type of way when I saw there was no comments on the video hope this meets you well I would love to learn more from you
It is staying sharp. You can see it keeps a perfect point. If I was going to give you a tip, I think you're pushing too hard. I'm a watercolour artist and use the same brushes. They take a bit of practice to not put the pressure on and get the thicker lines.
Thank you for the comment. This was a new brush that I was trying out… but compared to the same size Raphael that I have the point is not as razor Sharp and I can’t get as fine of lines. Will try lessening my pressure. Thanks for watching. 👍
what raphael brush do u mean that stay razor sharp even if u put pressure on it? i am so confused, i need a round wcbrush i was going to buy series 7 until i started seeing people complaining about it, now i dont know what to do :( its been a month, what do you think about it now? @@davidpentecost
Pentel should make this pocket brush pen in a few more larger bristle sizes. There is nothing that comes quality of the ink, the feed, the snap, and point of the bristles. A true masterpiece.
Quick question: how do you recommend keeping the brush pen when NOT in use - sideways, brush tip up or brush tip down? Great vid, BTW. 👍 Thanks for the info!
Awesome videos! I haven't used the 13, but I do have a 50, which I'm pretty sure is identical overall but has sable hair and a different finish on the body. I agree with your assessment. Body feels a bit thin, but the flow and quality of the brush is fantastic. Also, when I tried to do markers over the ink it bled pretty badly. So I do not like the default Kuretake ink and I always use my own ink in a converter. From what I can tell, in terms of actual brush and line quality, these and the Pentel are on nearly equal footing with the difference mainly being the heavier, nicer feel of the Kuretake metal body. Thanks for the cool videos.
That seems very handy. Do you suggest such tools? I've considered painting GunPla (plastic models of robots, generally) and I see similar products advertised.
Very inspiring! Nice work, very clean, superb execution, it's perfect. I have a Raphael 8404 size 2, with Kaimei Moonpalace sumi ink, on Deleter Kent paper, I have very nice results, but I'm curious about your ink and paper ?
I don't know if I'm the only one who squealed when seeing template for comic book thumbnail templates but I squealed. I needed this so much for my comics. Thanks for showing it on your video
Awesome video darling... I love comic book art!! I don't draw anymore nor have I ever done comic book art so this is a great fix for me LOL Loved this my dear and I'll be seeing you again my friend! 🌹🌹
I almost ruined my natural bristle kuretake with this same ink. It started drying in the bristles and i had to clean it. I switched to the Dr. PH Martins Ocean fountain pen ink. It's not as nice of a black but it is waterproof and matte finish.
Interesting…so Kuretake I have is the synthetic bristle version and so far it seems to be working okay. I really like the Black Star ink so I hope I can continue to use it.
I appreciate the comment…and I’ll sure you are correct. I’ve never had any real issues…and the pens are so cheap, I’d rather buy a new pen that have to have a bunch of different bottles of ink since I bounce back and forth between a traditional brush and a brush pen.
Hi David. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a New Yorker expat living abroad). I'm fairly new to Brush Pens (I usually use Fountain Pens with different nibs in my art) and I didn't know about this Kuretake #13 Brush Pen and it's compatibility with the Platinum Ink Converter... Which is perfect for me 'cause I was looking for something similar to carry with me for my sketching outdoors and being able to use my own ink selection as I do with my Fountain Pens, so Thanks for this video and info... it really helps! Cheers from Madrid! 😁👍🤙
