I went to Versailles in 2017 and def did not have to pay that 35 euro fee you mentioned. Sounds like a scam to me, unless it's a new thing to combat tourism.
Oh good to know!! This definitely wasn’t the case for me either when I went in 2015. But the guards collecting the money at the station were in uniform so they seemed to be legitimate employees, so using this as a tactic to control tourism makes sense to me!
