To males, especially solo and small groups; please be careful in Kabukicho. As a solo male here I had a couple scary experiences here. Walking from my hotel (Gracery, the big Godzilla one) to the robot restaurant, I got harassed by the African bouncers of a nightclub, they grabbed my arm and tried to force me in their club and stood in front and blocked my way to the restaurant. I did a U turn and tried to head back to my hotel and they literally followed me down 2 streets. I had to duck into a shop and browse for 15 minutes until they left. The next morning I left to travel to my next location and see a young, maybe early 20s American guy naked except for boxer shorts, sitting in the middle of the street crying. I asked if he needed help and he said he thinks we was drugged and had bouncers threaten to keep his passport until he paid them. Japan is an amazing place but it has a real dodgy area where the police simply won't help you in these areas (they even put signs up to say they won't help if you go into these clubs). By contrast, Osaka and Kyoto were totally safe.
I just spent 3 days in Osaka, 3 days in Tokyo - I found Tokyo to be overstimulating and a vibe killer compared to Osaka. So many lights, colors, sounds, smells, people, directions, traffic - I had to go back to my hotel multiple times a day just to decompress while in Tokyo. I found Osaka to be much more laid back, the food much better with almost no wait times.
The cat cafe in Shinjuku (Calico if I remember right) have great staff (and an extra level for the cats to live not open to the public) and look after their cats really well. Cats live better lives indoors and these ones were really happy and healthy. The owl cafes like the one in Kyoto are quite harmful to their animals. These poor birds are chained up to perches for 12 hours a day and do not live happy lives.
Unfortunately anything with aerosol is not good for you for those that are mindful what you put on your bodies. Cream sunscreen is inconvenient but healthier.
I wouldn't call it regrets to be honest, travelling is wonderful and the journey is part of the experience, each person has a different trip method and can't just make a common denominator to fit everyone standards.
i also ate Kobe beef from a street stall in Dotonburri and it really sucked and was sooo tough. Gross, 1400 yen fürn arsch bezahlt. At least i ate some good one a couple of days later.
Thanks for the tips, I swear you've seriously levelled up my last (and upcoming) Japan trip :) Any other tips on things to pack and bring, I feel you might have more gate-kept tips lol
