So if you determine the radius of your circle, you can then double it then multiply by 3.14 to get the total circumference. Divide that by 4 (for ease of calculation) to determine the length of 90 degrees of the whole. Once you have the length measurement calculated, you should be able to divide that by your desired stave width to get the total number of staves in 90 degrees. Divide 90 degrees by the number of staves to get the angle between each piece. I think that would then be cut half on both sides of the staves to get the proper arc. Let me know if that isn’t correct. I was pretty good with geometry, but I have never actually built any of these curved pieces
Wayne I followed your instructions and my toy box lid came out perfect. Thank you again. The only thing I would add to this video is actually ripping each stave at the adjusted degree. This can be tricky for beginners that have never cut both sides at a certain degree and end up with the required bottom width. But other than that you did great!!!!
How does one cut the 5/8" hole in the ends with a drill press? You mentioned how to get the 4 degree angle but not how one is supposed to drill it. The first end that I tried to drill split the wood piece. Appreciate your help
Good question; After I dry fit the segments on the form I take it apart and apply a generous coat of glue to each edge and put the segments back on the form before strapping the lid together.Sorry; I had to review my video to see what I said, since it was made several years ago.
@WhatsupWayneLWC No worries. Thanks for the clarification. I just didnt want to assume. That's what I figured. It made sense, but I haven't done a ton of wood gluing.
Hi Wayne, these directions are great. Question- when I made my top arch 6" the circle trace went off my sides leaving a 3 1/4" straight edge each side. Is this going to be an issue? My treasure chest lid needs to be 16 3/8" wide. center of that is 8 3/16". The intersect was 14" I used to trace the half circle. Wish I could attach photo of template to help explain. Should I make the arch smaller to meet the 16 3/8" width?
I have that same performax sander and can’t get the belt to track correctly. Any tips? It goes to the right. I have tried adjusting it but it does not stay
My discovery: take off the belt and put it in your wife's best cooking pot. Fill it up with hot water and a cup of ammonia and let it boil for a minute, then let it sit for an hour or so. You'll be surprised: it comes out as new, without having to use a wearing wire brush.
