it'd be nice to hear about other countries' monarchies. it'd be hard to do in bite size chunks so maybe organise it around themes, like 'republicanism' or 'media intrusion' or 'corruption.' i guess it'd be interesting to learn what the study of modern monarchy entails...
I don’t think it’s a progressive thing that Africans had rich monarch!! I think African class devision was intensified by colonialism. Which strengthened the ruling class.
A truly great resource, that not only can the University enjoy, but the whole planet. These historical records are pure treasure. Thank you for publishing them.
I see Meghan as a victim of two things. A tabloid media pandering to its racist consumers. And a publicity culture where people (e.g. Meghan) feel compelled to monitor media coverage of themselves. I think Diana was a victim of the latter as well. One hears that Kate doesn't consume any news media at all and that seems like a smart decision for someone in her position. It'd be interesting to hear your take on this.
Thank you for your response. Yes I agree with your analysis of Meghan Markle and Princess Diana and their (often) unhealthy relationship with the tabloid press and monitoring media coverage. Princess Catherine’s strategy of not following media reports may or may not be the whole story (if she doesn’t watch it herself then her advisers certainly do and brief her accordingly - hence the quick response to the photo scandal), but it certainly accords with a longer tradition of the British royal family giving the impression that they were immune to press gossip (Queen Elizabeth II famously never commented on news items). Behind this façade, however, I think members of the British royal family have long paid attention to press reports on their family - even if they choose not to respond publicly to this coverage. The introduction regarding Markle and her idiot husband is misleading. The fact that Markle was of mixed racial heritage did not 'raise eyebrows' as stated. It was, in fact, celebrated. It was hoped it would be an asset to the Royal Family in a multi-racial society. It was reported in the media in a positive way. Sadly Markle herself resorted to using her racial heritage as a sword and a shield in order to silence justifiable criticism of her conduct. When this was not successful in silencing her critics, she fled!
Yes and they really could have changed the world, uniting the commonwealth. They could have been a truly international couple, living all over the world, and speaking for equal rights for all. Threw it away with both hands :(
I guess this was written last year as there is no longer a reigning queen since Margarethe II's abdication in January 2024... However, it sounds like this will be an interesting podcast series.
Outstanding. Wonderful to see such quality analysis being made available to the public. As we approach the coming conflagration in the Western Pacific, the importance of intelligent public discourse in Australia that is well informed by our history will only become more acute.
This is an awful account of the issue in West Papua. Whether you're for or against independence, at least give an honest telling of events. "Indonesia started their campaign because in the war [WW2] they discovered there was lots of natural resources in West Papua". Such an awful and intended mischaracterisation to make Indonesia look like it was simply "land-grabbing". Sukarno and the rest of the Anti-Colonial movement had always included West Papua as part of the successor state to the Dutch East Indies. No one seriously disputed this at the time. It was only in 1949 after right-wing parties in the Dutch parliament decided they needed something to hang onto to save face did they create and manufacture this into an issue. The Dutch after brutally murdering Indonesians for 5 years only decided to hold onto West Papua because a large portion of the Dutch public still thought imperialism was a good thing. That's literally it. It was the left-wing parties in Indonesia that made reclaiming West Papua the main goal. And it was the Soviet Union that actually helped Indonesia do it.
