For what is that experiment. You are wearing aligner for treatment not to drink coffee in them. I went through Invisalign and had no problems with any grime nor stains.
Hey Dr. Shotell, I know this isn't really something you think about much as an orthodontist, but do you have any input on accuracy of soft tissue capture with the i900?
we have gotten this lumina tip replaced from the previous version black tip and we are not happy. saliva still slows everything done. on this video you scan on a dry model and even with that it doesn't capture everything in one shot. the itero claims we can capture distal portions of the farthest molars by tipping the angle from occlusal but honestly you would have to break patients jaw to open that wide to make it happen. The autocleanup and turning it off for lower jaw dentures scan is not an option for me because it is not capturing vestibule completely. Primescan is still the fastest and more precise. I think Lumina could have def better design.
no one seems to have data on actual clinical results on these direct print units. Many argue the material science isnt there with the resins to get the adequate biomechanics needed for ortho cases. Thoughts?
A perfect example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." Look at all the material used for supports. Look how much time you're going to need to spend adjusting the trays where the supports are cut. I don't see this being a good option yet. Cost wise for equipment and resin, I doubt this can touch what I can do with a couple phrozen printers and a pressure former.
I have this on right now and honestly I rather use the older metal ones.. Uncomfortable, unreasonable extremely expensive, they permanently glue a metal hook behind your bottom teeth, and overall higiene. I clean mines at least 5 times a day. The only convenience is for the dentist to make a whole bunch of money really. I paid $500 each pair and I have 2.

Great Presentation, good to have to know the state of the art. However, PET -G is no longer the preferred material for aligners. The leading aligner brands use a composite, multilayer material made by co - extrusion. Only 3 companies have this for commercial sales: Baymaterials-Straumann, Scheu and the Tristar company. So far, only composite multilayer materials have proven cases for root translation. (I did not mention Invisalign because Smart track is not available for commercial sales)
