I also saw him in the Book of Mormon in LA, and donated to BCEFA so I could get a picture with him and Jared Gertner. He was beyond spectacular in the role and so sweet in person to fans. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to see him live. So much more amazing stuff he could have done.
This is so sad; he really was a great talent, and I expected him to be around a lot longer. I'm glad he was genuinely a nice guy because that's always the way he came across.
Mateo, your story is fantastic. What a great human Gavin was. I got out my Playbills and was surprised I had seen him five times on Broadway, starting with Hair, where he was an exceptional stand out amongst an exceptional cast. I feel lucky to have experienced his talent, and am very sad at today’s news. A massive loss to the Broadway family and his many fans.
This is so nice to hear. I also saw him in Book of Mormon in Toronto and I've always thought about how lucky I was. I was just thinking about him yesterday because "It Only Takes a Moment" from Hello Dolly was in a playlist I was listening to. And I started thinking about all of the great roles he's had and I hadn't thought about him in MONTHS and the next day we get this news... it's just total whiplash and I'm so sad.
Thank you for your story. I’ve been in tears on and off since hearing this afternoon. Trying to work in between. I just feel so much love for this gentle soul. Saw him a couple times. But more on You Tube. And in interviews. He was the real deal. Thanks for affirming that. ❤️
This is such a great story, we had the pleasure of seeing Gavin play the wolf and prince in Into the Woods recently, absolute genius and great to know he was generous with you and your friends
What if Pippin doesn't want to fit in, he just wants to... sit in something? (I know, I know, it's a stretch 😂) Pippin and Jesus Christ Superstar (and especially Pippin) are two shows that I always want to see another production of, due to the "how are they going to stage it this time?" factor. When you have the contemporary music and ancient stories, it's like you get the license to place it anywhere in between. I love this show. I can so relate to Pippin's wandering around aimless in search of something more, possibly glamorous. I've heard "I don't get it" from some people tho... like, what's with this group of players, they are just... there? I really dig the metaphor tho. Thank you for another great analysis! I had no idea Pippin did so much wandering, harmony-wise, before finding home.
GREAT point about the staging! The audience already has to buy into the anachronism of the music, so they’ll readily buy into anachronism in the staging as well.
I have just found your channel and I'm fascinated by your breakdown of everything. I'm a singer...but not musical theater so it's quite interesting to hear all the analysis. I adore Aaron Tveit and had the priviledge of seeing him perform in Moulin Rouge. I would love your analysis of him singing Roxanne with his opt up. He makes it seem so efffortless. Thanks in advance!
You are definitely correct re: lyrics. Interestingly the Jackson 5 cover of the song changes the lyrics to “cats SIT on the windowsill, children SIT in the SHOW”, which reportedly Stephen Schwartz was not happy about. Anyway, great video as always!
Thank you so much for analyzing this and explaining how it works. I"m mostly a lighting designer, and can't sing worth a darn, but there are three songs I will sing when I am alone in my car, Corner of the Sky and Extraordinary from Pippin and Once We were Kings from Billy Elliot.
I saw her as Audrey in Little Shop and… whew. I’ve never had such a strong feeling of witnessing the origin story of a future legend. Her acting is even better than her vocals, if you can believe that. And then I saw her in I Can Get it for You Wholesale and learned she started as a dancer?? Truly a generational talent. I’m so excited to see her in Gypsy.
Just saw the regional production of Waitress in La Mirada California with Desi Oakley back in the role of Jenna. So I’m in a Waitress mood again and came back to this video.
I'm only seeing this video far too late, but it popped up in my feed and I have an interpretation about the piano motif at the beginning of the song. It returns after Orpheus looks back, but not immediately after; it only starts at the beginning of "Road to Hell (Reprise)", before Hermes sings about telling the story again. So I think it's about Orpheus and Eurydice's love returning after the tragedy, to try once more. Because maybe it will turn out this time. It was their love that moved the gods; and now, after they lose each other forever, the piano tells us that they are going to fall in love again.
I know rock music like them power chords, but I never realized it's related to the electric guitar overtones! Learned something today. I buy your argument, yeah. The sections might be more varied, and the form might be harder to see, but it's not through-composed. Even without the more detailed analysis you made, those repeat symbols in the score alone is a strong enough indication for me.
Great explanations! Despite the end section being slightly different chords and melodies, I have always felt that the end section was a return to the same feeling as the start of the song, mirroring exactly what the song is about (something that was whole got separated, and finding love is about becoming whole again), but more complete and familiar. For me its also very much a classic rock song, perfectly fitting the type of song in-universe Hedwig would definitely write.
I don't remember unsubbing. But this popped up on my page and ohhhhh boy. God I love this song. Also I just love LND. I've loved far worse Phantom related content lol. But how you always start off poking my ribs? First Lily's Eyes lyrics, now going for the opening?? 😂🤪 we all got our opinions. I'll respect yours. 🎉
9:19 a simpler thing to call that chord is just thirdless E over Bb. 10:35 It does actually makes perfect sense. You said it yourself "every note leads to the next chord in a satisfying way." 11:45 - that's a good chord!! I wouldn't say it's wonky - all the notes are what i call A's bright notes, in that they support A as the root, yes, right up to the 11(Eb). I guess you could call it the chord an A lydian. And then moving to Bb is really strong voice leading, sounds soo good. 17:09 - you could just say you're in Cm/Eb major (Cm - dorian, Eb Lydian) A actually does harmonically support the key of Eb, but is is the weakest/most pensive note you could put in those chords because it's right on the border between being "in the harmonic space" and being "outside the harmonic space." Huge congratulations to you, man. This is really cool stuff I'm excited to follow your stuff in the future !
This is such fabulous news! Kudos to you, young sir. I also echo the comment about getting to say we are those who watched your videos BEFORE you got the Tony!
