Good buyers guide here, but swap to k20 as the first thing you recommend? Not exactly the easiest to do, remember that almost all Toyota engines from the 90s, all the V6's and even up to todays modern 2GR V6 fits in the bay with very little modifications compared to sticking a Honda in there, Toyota were just so easy they used the same mounting points and components on many cars! Just wanted to point something out on gearboxes. You can fix every single SW20 transmission by filling MT-90 from Redline :D Had 4 of these cars, all were grinders in either third or fifth as they tend to be, especially in early models, they weren't after MT-90 ;) Why? Cuz Toyota recommends GL-5, which is better than GL-4, but fun fact, GL-5 eats the brass syncros. Also, if you build a "5S-GTE" Turbo motor, you're set for life, (5S block with 3S head) 2.2 STRONG block and tons of power ;)
As for "you can't beat it for the money " ... not true in the US right now. For mid-engine sports cars, the 1st and 2nd generation Porsche Boxsters and 1st gen Caymans are much cheaper than equivalent condition MR2s.
I’ve owned 5 different 2g eclipse and had non of the problems you mention exept for the valve cover leaking. The biggest problem is that it was cheap and anybody could afford it and beat it to death and never do the proper maintenance
Great review of a super car. Am original owner of 91T. Would buy a newer model provided it was not ruined by gov/ins regs. If you like the basic design you might consider performance (engine). Thank you for your interest!
I own a completely stock Silverstone 2004 with OEM factory hardtop. Bought in July 2012 from original owner with 68k on the odo. Eleven years later? 98k. Absolutely LOVE this car. Driving it is always fun! Doesn’t get a lot of road time, though. My other car is a 2013 Camaro.
This guy clearly has never owned an S2K. Probably read something online about some bogus problems and made a video about it. These cars are unbelievably reliable and any issues they ever had were from a poor owner who never took care of the car. Owner of an 01 for 6 years. Make sure to do your valve adjustments boys 😄
Honestly they could bring back a retro style sw20 version or even just pull a play from Nissan or Honda and start producing OEM replacement parts for the 2nd gen again..hell even the 3rd gen Spyder OEM parts are all almost sold out from Toyotas warehouse and surplus, and they only sold like 15,000 in the us
Great video! I bought a 10th anniversary edition sw20 in september 2022, it has rust repairs done to it already, i will repaint it when it gets warm again and will get it running in summer🤘
Mr2 turbo owners know these infamous words: Hose from hell. Gotta drop the engine to replace a 25$ part. Yay. At least it doesn’t damage the engine when it goes.
Well, not immediately 😆 we must drive around with one eye on the temp gauge because of these things. The other potential issue with that hose is when taking off all the stuff to get to it, you might strip a thread or two, like one of the exhaust nuts/bolts 🫠
do not forget the Strud bars Back and front .. about 30 cm long parts.. have to be canged against INOX bars.. most als completely gone; also the Fuel FIlter and holder are really bad metal
i bought my mr2 just this past september, and if you're considering buying one, do it. the fun i've had in the little thing is unbeatable for the money.
I think the moder version of a S2000 will be an frs/toyota 86 with a k20/k24 swap in it, now the double wishbone in the front will be missing but the totota 86 is closest to the S2000 feel
If they do, it might be okay, but it could never match the original because of the new regulations everywhere and because people don't drive anymore, they want to get fast food, be on the phone all day, and expect their car to get them out of any jam they get into because it has to be the cars fault. Plus, they can't drive a stick, too many pedals. Nope fat sloppy humans are made for these new golf carts that drive themselves and have more bass than a concert hall and come with a built-in baby carriage for their fat misbehaving kids. And it would have the size of a SUV.
The difference between the AP1 and AP2 isn't just the engine..... they also changed transmission ratio's, suspension components, traction control, soft top with glass, bumpers, headlights, tail lights, interior panels, and a few other things I can't think of right now
