Thank you. An excellent movie. Actually, my father-in-law was there as well. He was a major in the Italian Army and was captured by the British circa 1940. Then taken to India as a POW. He couldn't say enough of the British, he was treated very well. They did treat the officers according to their rank and he was also assigned an aid. How I wish I had asked him more about it.
One of my teachers was with the Black Watch. Mr Nicholson. A wonderful man. However, he hated the Italians most sincerely - but loved the Germans. I never understood why. However, when he found out that I was half-German, my marks went up remarkably. Good job, I wasn’t half Italian. Incidentally, I love the Italians far more than most Germans - in general.
Go fight in your own country. Love it. Conquering people armed with spears. How heroic. Down with the Kings of Europe and Russia. Down with King Charles and Queen Camilla. Lol
13.21 - 'We must be the first Englishmen to be captured by Italians, since Boudicea..." - as if the Angles, Saxons and Jutes were present amongst the Iceni and other Celtic Britons at the time of Boudicca!
@@janetmackinnon3411 The point of my comment is that the 'English' [the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians from Northern Europe were not in Briton at the time of Boudicca. The natives were the Britons not the English.
I think the most famous British film involving the Italians as enemies during the 1939-45 war was 'The Silent Enemy' about the Italian midget submarine attacks on British ships in Gibraltar. The one bit that remains in my memory is when a British sailor, on guard duty, tries to start a conversation with a captured Italian diver saying, 'Hey Alfonso, any bambinos?'.
Is your dvd in English ? I could not find it. I found an English VHS, from where I took the audio, and the Italian DVD, from where I took the video, and merged them to make this youtube video
This film just goes to show that not all Italian made war films are “Spaghetti war films”, although with Dino De Laurentis and David Niven involved it stood more chance of being a good film rather than a “B” movie.
"You walked the men into he ground today, Well that's better than burying them." LOL! If you walked them into the ground, you do not have to bury them, they walked into their graves.
Its been decades since I've seen this last. Thanks for posting, I've been looking for this forever. I thought Roger Moore was in it, that's probably why I couldn't find it. I love this movie... "Did Julius Caesar said they can take his mule too".....lol [The doctor was referring to the Captain when he let them escape]
As a kid, I had many a toy tank carved made by Italian POW's My grandad was with Montgomery in WWII. . He taught me a few things about Italians. Half of them didn't want to be in the war anyway.
Wonderful film, brings back memories of watching with my Grandparents as a kid. Who new I would end up living and working in Italy for 2 1/2 years. Thank you for uploading and sharing. Cheers... Grazie mille!
