I’m new all this but my thoughts were is there a flame while it’s in the bag in your pocket or does the flame get extinguished? How does it stay lit so I don’t understand all that part but I really appreciate how you showed us how to extinguish it because I would hate to have all that, lighter fluid evaporate. Whoever suggested the plastic bag that seems pretty wise as well thank you.
@Thereal111t
@Thereal111t 7 дней назад
It’s a catalytic reaction that happens without a flame once it gets warmed up. The fuel evaporates the same way as it would out of a zippo lighter, but when it touches the catalyst the chemical reaction happens that results in heat.

It’s a steel outer pan so of course it’ll scrub clean. Easy way is to put a little water in it and put it back on the heat, once it starts to boil just work the dirt with a spatula and it’ll soften and come away, saves all the scrubbing

This is kind of what I would have expected. What you did was convert the Dietz lantern in to a Zippo lighter, in fact, you would have probably only needed a spark to light it. Just like a Zippo lighter, extended burning vaporized the fuel rapidly and caused it to run away. On the other hand, if you were to run Kerosene in a Zippo lighter, you would need an external flame to ignite it instead of the flint, but, you could burn it constantly for quite some time (possibly until the fuel ran out).

@@Thereal111t well, I appreciate that. After watching your video a year or so back I found Amazon had a few and bought one. I have been very pleased, especially with its speed. I also bought one of the tiny Trangia alcohol stove clones for <$10 for the simmer ring. As you have said, they are pretty worthless outside by themselves but I cut some aluminum from an old No Trespassing sign and blocked off 2/3 of the opening. Much better.

Excellent job in getting ALL that to pack so compactly! I am doing something similar but on a smaller scale. I am 82 & my wife is younger; we are blessed with 3 younger generations, all of whom are grown except the great grandson who will be 1 year old next week. I am trying to develop a compact kit of various components for my wife & me. My plan is to include military surplus, classic camping gear, plus some modern Stainless Steel. Would you like to see my Older Couple's Kit when I am finished? Thanks. May Gods bless you & have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Thanks for this. I'm willing to bet that it would work fine and safely if you mixed up the white gas with some used cooking oil. All of these fuels are just hydrocarbon oils that are different thicknesses.
@cfrost87
@cfrost87 9 месяцев назад
The viscosity isn't the thing that is different-- every oil has a different flash point (the temperature that it ignites at).
@austinmesta9862
@austinmesta9862 9 месяцев назад
@@cfrost87 the length of the hydrocarbon chain determines the boiling point, thermal rate of absorption, and basically everything that influences the flash point. If u compare a bunch of hydrocarbons, they're all hydrocarbon. The only main difference is the length of the molecules.
@cfrost87
@cfrost87 9 месяцев назад
@@austinmesta9862 well using a fuel source that has too high or low of a flash point can cause issues-- like a lamp/lantern blowing up. Too thick and the wick will get burned instead of the fuel.
@austinmesta9862
@austinmesta9862 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, ur right. But if you get a mix that is the same viscosity or close to what's meant to be used, it works. There's no actual way to design a lantern for a specific exact fuel. They can design it so this thickness of oil will wick and burn without smoking etc. It's all based on the general characteristics of the fuel. You can actually run a kerosine lantern on diesel just fine. They're close enough. It's like how vegetable oil and methanol mixed together will run a Diesel engine

The high tech high heat system Trangia had was called DuoSSal. Stainless steel inside coated with aluminum outside, so you got the conductive properties of Aluminum and the easier cleaning stainless steel. Also kosher for aluminophobes. They are out of production now. I saw a No. 25 Duossal skillet/plate going for $50 on amazon yesterday. I just ordered a No. 27 Duossal 1L Outer pot from them today. It ran about $30. My full No. 25 kit is HA. It should fit inside my smaller No. 25 pot. We'll see.
@Thereal111t
@Thereal111t 11 месяцев назад
Duossal is definitely the best. My four Trangia 25 sets either started out as, or have been converted to Duossal. I don’t think that it’s a coating process. From what I understand disks of both metals are pressed together in a hydraulic mold. You can observe a difference between standard pots and Duossal pots. The standard aluminum pots have a rolled lip. Duossal pots just have a flared edge. As far as durability and generational durability, Duossal is the main option.
@Thereal111t
@Thereal111t 11 месяцев назад
I had an aluminum 25 at one point. I decided to replace the pan with duossal. Then I thought (like you)’just one of the pots.’ Then I thought ‘what the hell?!’ And got the other pot. HERE LIES THE DANGER THOUGH… All I needed was an upper and lower windscreen and a burner and a pot grip to have a whole additional set… … and then maybe replace the fry pan…

@@Thereal111t My 'cunning plan' is to use a 27 pot inside as a third vessel. We'll see if that works. And I have a vintage Swiss boy scout <<Pfadfinder>> aluminum fry pan, from a longlost stormcooker set, that fits perfectly inside the No. 25 HA fry pan.

Gworks is the best in my opinion. The camping butane to food service butane adapter is a gworks. Whenever I look for it on Amazon, the web site reminds me that over the years I’ve purchased something like thirteen or fourteen of those. The adapter from the propane converter to the camping butane is a ‘camping moon’ brand. The gworks one looked identical but was very expensive.

Just drill a 1/8" hole through the top of the cap/inner cap sideways (parallel with the sealing surface/horizontally) and put a 1/8 roll pin in there. Problem solved. Could also drill a small hole through just the outer cap and inject some epoxy in the void between the two. This "child-safety-ing all the caps" trend to compensate for extinct parenting is getting out of hand.
