New episodes just about every week! Follow us on our journey of buying raw land and building our homestead! Our mission is to chase a simpler life, becoming free from debt, and being self sufficient by providing our family healthy food from our farm.
Hey! I just watched your video with the RV tour. I realize it was a while ago, but do you have a link for the tubs that you put underneath the dining nook? We are buying the exact model and I would love to know from you instead of trying to hunt down some thing that would work.
I have installed two or those doors one in each coop and it is be far the best I've had and I have gone through a few that never held up. On a note both are installed inside the coop and not outside, helps with the freezing weather that I get in the winter months.
Many ways you can tell if they are hens or rooster. I have noticed roosters have bigger combs and their wing touch their butts. I saw a video showing if you grab their feet and lay them on their back and slowly lower their body a hen will hold herself up a rooster relaxes and just hangs. I am looking forward to my next brood to test this out to double check my first method

Hey, thanks for the comment. Fortunately there was a line that ran through part of our property. So we only had to run about 700ft. Since we're building a house, they did absorb most of the cost as well.
Gm has a new brake controller and a software up grade to fix this just have to convince your dealer. A lot of people having this problem without solar panels. Sorry guys fix the problem not Jerri rigging your camper electrical system. To each his own !
Installing a solar disconnect isn't really jerri rigging. the new models grand design campers come with it standard. I just had my truck in at the dealership, I didn't see any recall but I'll ask next time! Thank you.

You have power now, that is not off grid now. Hot water is easy off grid with a on propane on demand you just need a small shed for protection. If you do get freezing you will have real trouble. Insulating box trailers work very well off grid.
You are in the Carolina's, On your property border, paint a purple ring on tree trunks every 10-12 feet. Thats the old school way of saying no trespassing and its a bit cheaper until you get signs and fences up all around. Most states still have the "Purple Paint Law"
Thanks for the comment. That’s a good idea. I considered that but I may have to put that on the inside. I don’t believe I can staple into the fiberglass window frame.
See GM TSB 23-NA-149 for information on the solution to this known issue. There is also TSB 23-NA-113 from summer 2023 that was the original service bulletin that describes the known issue

Man that tractor is awesome, good for you! We would love to have a tractor like that and are so tired of doing everything with the wheel barrow or trying to find somebody with an excavator/tractor/bulldozer to do it for us. Last year I was so tired and got a quote for a Kubota like you have: 65k CAD!!! I couldn't believe it. The cost of living is so high or wages so low (+2 young children) that there is hardly anything left at the end of the day.
We just received the bill for property tax and home insurance: 4000 CAD. So thats about 330CAD/month for home insurance and property tax. You haven't eaten yet, haven't paid for the power bill, have no car or car insurance, no tractor, no heating, no internet, no nothing. And children take everything to a whole different level. We find the homestead life extremely expensive but thats because we started from 0 (even buying the land to start can be the first huge challenge nowadays). However once you are done with a huge investment and you have good systems in place you can live pretty cheap. We like the lifestyle and find the hard work very rewarding.
Wow that seems expensive! I know it’s easier said than done, but we relocated to this area because it was more affordable with property taxes being very low and taking advantage of some agricultural/farm tax discounts.
@@RootsUnearthed Yes it is very expensive here and at the same time wages are extremely low. Good for you! We are in Nova Scotia and is far as I know there is nowhere where you can just build up your homestead without having to go through a massive amount of expensive hoops (engineers, electricians, plumbers, government inspections,..) and then being punished with property taxes for what you have built. I know that there are states in the US where you can build+pay hardly any property taxes. But for us trying to move to the states would just be a huge journey that I don't want to take on. I am now wondering if there is any place in Canada where you can just build and pay reasonable property tax?
The easiest and best way is usually to send a muncher in and mulch everything into the ground. However it also cost the most money. And then you still need to get someone in with a bulldozer or so to level everything nicely. And if you want to get nice pasture you have to lime, fertilize, etc. So much work and money.. many people have no idea when they see a nice pasture/field of how much work it was to get there. You guys are doing a good job though and even though the tractor costs a fortune (we still cant afford one even though we want one for 8 years now and we are so tired of doing everything with a wheel barrow or trying to find someone to do it for us with machinery.. but its still a lot cheaper that way) maybe if you use it enough it helps pay for it? Cheers
hey, nice video, two questions why did you use clover as a nitrogen fixer rather than other root crop mixes as on the big farms. second, are you planning on getting the firewood out of the wood piles or just burning them?
Hey Jared. Thanks for the comment. The main reason we did clover is that we didn’t want to mow and it won’t get too high. We plan on retaining about 25% clover mix in the future as well. I’m not sure what other mix you’re referring to but I’m open to suggestions! This soil is pretty tough and from what I’ve been told/read clover grows nearly anywhere. As for the wood, yes I will retrieve them in the future, I just haven’t had time to cut them and chop into firewood. I have been considering getting a sawmill but that isn’t in the budget right now either.
Great video! I noticed in the background the loader for the tractor was left up. You always want to put it down. The little ones can be playing on it and hit the arm and crush someone under it. Just something I noticed. Keep up the good work :)
You can broadcast clover with a spreader for sure. That's how I planted mine. That said it was a failure after a year or so. Didn't spray it enough and early enough and it was overtaken by foxtail. Also had poor survival...I didn't follow advice I give others and do a soil test😂😂
Hey Nate, thanks for the comment! I'm hopeful anything grows.. we planted rye last year but it was too hot and no rain... So our clearing was a giant brick that we had to till up. I have the soil test kit... didn't do it yet!
@@RootsUnearthed it won't work if you crack it half way open like you would with wheat it some large seed🤣🤣 . But a broadcast spreader if working properly will totally shut off the seed flow, if you just barely crack it even small seeds will just trickle through which is what you want with those small seeds. They aren't thrown as far either cause of weight but you just tighten up your tracks. Some folks suggest missing them with sand...they suspend in the sand and then you have more material to spread and you can let it flow out quicker as you spread. Me personally I'm not sold on that the seeds will stay suspended in the sand evenly and your buying a few bags of sand for nothing. As far as spraying...I don't think you will have as much issue with weeds as I did since I was planting old fields with a seed bed from years of growth and the seed falling off the bushhog from cutting adjacent fields. You with old forest your seed bank won't be as high. I will just give you some of my advice from living here in the upstate as well as from education from my college days of soil science. We have acidic soils here in Upstate SC...you are either im guessing located here or in the Piedmont of NC based on the soil and timber and terrain. It is usually recommended to add a ton or more lime per acre to get to a more neutral soil pH.
I know those logs were in front of the tractor but did they keep you from putting the loader down and curling the grapple/bucket to let you walk out backwards?
I tried for like 30 minutes on my own before filming this. But yes, those rear tires just were completley sunk. The only way i was able to get out was the traction boards on the front tires with 4WD on. I need to take the bucket back there and level out that trail.

Please tell everyone that Jesus Christ Loves you, and He rules. John 3:14-18 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.***Amen, Amen, Amen! Thank you Father for Your Word as we strive to do Your Will. Bless Your Jesus Christ followers***
A good way to start fires is diesel fuel, if you don’t want to put that on , get a weed burner from harbor freight. That’s what I use and it is so much faster:) love the videos…also look for an old blower motor out of a furnace. You can just leave it running next to the fire:)
Hey Richard - thanks for the comment. Good idea on the blower. As long as the generator could run it we could do that. I will try the diesel fuel this weekend as I have a bit more to burn!
