Really excellent insight into an opera that I have already seen a half-dozen times. It gave me greater appreciation for the characters as well as the director's discretion. I can't wait to see it in a couple weeks.

Well, at least this Tosca staging makes sense and it's a gallant effort to remain true to the spirit of the original plot, while attempting to achieve a sense of 21st century relevance; unlike the 2023 Flying Dutchman clip I just watched, which was very strange.
This was an interesting interpretation of Tosca, and it is clear that Dr. Fineberg has considered the major themes of opera and their relevance in our own lives. I’m grateful, but I wish that he would pronounce Italian names an words more accurately. Mario’s name is Cavarados’si, not Caver’dossi or some such. And his third act aria is”Luce’van Le stel’le. Nearly all Italian word are pronounced with the stress or emphasis on the next to last syllable.
