So true. It's not the exact reading that matters as much as the relative reading. Relative readings can't be compared if one is not consistent in their hold. Nice video!

No it doesn't, with a properly sized Energizer. "Grass load," or the grass that touches a fence should never be too much for a properly sized Energizer. (Note we live in Western Washington with almost 100 inches rain a year, so we understand "grass load")

I use the standard temp fence posts from the local farm stores. Don’t know brand but every store sells them. Not the Gallagher brand. What I’d like to know, is how long are THESE steel ground spikes? And, do you think the black material resists UV degradation BETTER than the white Or yellow? I know many agree that the YELLOW AND WHITE clip on or mail in insulators for steel or wood posts, are said to become more brittle and break SOONER than the Black ones do! I agree! Please comment! Thanks 🙏
@trackingyranch6821
@trackingyranch6821 2 года назад
The main post (where the reel assembly is) has a 7" spike. The line posts are 4" long each. This length works well in most settings and with the use of the adjustable guy strings it really helps to ensure the posts stay put when making sharp angle changes.

That turbo braid looks like some good stuff. We started with the 6mm poly rope but couldn't fit enough on a standard reel for some of our bigger paddocks. We went to 4.5mm poly rope which worked okay but it still hard to reel through grass especially with the geared reels. How does the turbo braid reel through tall grass? It looks like it would be smaller and smoother which should make it reel easier.

We run 4 sets of tumblewheels, on about 150 acres of prescribed grazed pastures with mostly feeder cattle and long heifers, on moderately varied terrain. Oldest set of wheels is about 3 years old. My wife, 13yr old daughters or myself each do the moves, depending on the day. Never have I had a failure on any of our reels with some reels almost 5 years old, and some classic reels well over 10yrs old. Feel free to check out our other videos on RU-vid of this in action.

Thanks for taking the time to do this demo. I've been considering this unit to move my goats around their copice/polard forest pasture. It is disappointing that its not designed for adding additional reels and post when you get to end of it, but other than thr drawback of having to purchase more units to increase the paddock size, I think I'm sold.
@trackingyranch6821
@trackingyranch6821 2 года назад

What are the stakes like in frozen ground. Do the spikes bend or break easily?
@trackingyranch6821
@trackingyranch6821 2 года назад
Super hard or rocky ground they will bend if not careful. For hard ground we make a pilot hole by hammering about 10" of a piece of rebar then pulling out. When they bend we just slip a small pipe over the spike and straighten them out slowly

@trackingyranch6821

We don't get blackberries in this field. Years of grazing ensure that. Other fields we do have some wild blackberries and enjoy watching each year as blackberries get eaten more and more. They love the young growth.

It works pretty well, but pretty soon you realize that its easy to train your sheep to a single poly wire 30 cm off the ground which is much cheaper, more flexibile with length options and much easier to move.
@trackingyranch6821
@trackingyranch6821 3 года назад
That's the joy of having many "tools" in your "toolbox." The Gallagher SmartFence system is just one of those "tools" that does a great job when needed. We find that the multi-wires of this system help with high pressure moves, like turning corners and controlling movements at gate openings. It's all about training our animals. Keep up the great work!

You must have way more docile sheep than we do in New Zealand where these where invented. My sheep just jump over a single wire that height or go underneath it, even if "Live". I just altered my three reel unit to run to eight wires at a cost of three dollars. Works a treat even for new lambs.

@peterdykzeul3074
@peterdykzeul3074 3 года назад
@@israelrika1931 Hi. I may be the wrong person to ask as I do not have one of these units and nor do I have goats. I graze my sheep and lambs with a seven wire electric fence using tape, not poly wire. I made it from a standard triple reel system and for five dollars New Zealand and ten minutes of work it now runs out as anything I chose between three and eight wires, my choice. Works like a charm. It is no more expensive but admittedly a bit more work as I space the pegs only two metres apart to keep them in. Do not buy one of those electric netting units. A pain in the arse to put up and the lambs get their heads stuck in the mesh so you cannot electrify it as it will kill them and the ewes graze and chew out the bottom wires. Gallager is a very innovative New Zealand company with its headquarters not fa from where I live.

My smart fence unit got horribly tangled when my sheep plowed through it and dragged it. (New charger now.) Weeks of untangling, very uneven strand lengths. I'll work on it when I get closer to spring.
@trackingyranch6821
@trackingyranch6821 3 года назад
Great comment, as I've had to deal with them being Tangled up as well, following a horse running through it. I find that the easiest way to fix the problem is to disconnect, unscrew, the metal connector that is at the far end, away from the reel, at the first post you set out. This allows you to treat each wire as it's own. Once you're able to coil up all the wires you can rethread them through the post and reconnect the metal clamp. I'll plan to do a video in the future showing this process.

What do you use for ground rod?
@trackingyranch6821
@trackingyranch6821 4 года назад
For our grazing properties, such as this one, with permanent exterior fences; we use a minimum 3 galvanized ground rod (10') apart system. If we're making temporary pens (such as at a horseback riding competition) we use a battery powered charger as a 3' long pointed galvanized T handle ground rod. They are manageable to push in, pull out easy, and work fine for us on smaller systems
