NOT SAFE! this is very dangerous, the aide pushing down or pulling the wheelchair can injure his back, hips, or legs! this is accident waiting to happen, this is not recommended! I’ve been pushing wheelchairs for years, if there’s no ramp, it’s a big NO!

Nice information. But what about the descent from the stairs?
@pelaajajm5698

Hello, Handi cap taxisriver here! I do "stair pulls guite often in my work. It works guite similarry as going up. You go down face towards front, wheeling the chair and gently lower chair to next step, after person is stopped, you then lower your self to next step and the repeat. Biggest difference is you dont push but bring chair to ledge and let gravity to do its job, you would just act as break and make movement slower and smooth so that it would not feel uncomftable or unsafe for person on chair. Big note is that you take hold of metal parts of handle at front of thise rubber grips as those rubber gribs over time can get loose and slip off? Which would lead to un wanted consagenses. Hopefully this helps.

Question: Should the stronger lifter be the one in front of the chair, or behind the chair? Thanks.

Handicap taxi driver here! I do "chair climbs" guite often in my work. Yes stronger person should be behind always because you as an *puller* act also as brakes. This is my opinion, but I feel front assistant is more like safty net, like if i slip up on stairs, chair does not fall down the stairs, too many times has assistant pushed too much so that I had to lift whole stair up just so my grip does not slip. Also good safty tip. Dont take hold of rubber part of handle, but of the metal bar on chair before rubber grip, this is because those gribs can disconnect suddendly while pulling and if you dont have assistant at front.... well I dont need to tell what could happen.

This is totally dangerous Move. for the person on top and the one in the wheelchair. the best and safest way is to bring the wheelchair down backwards. with the person on the bottom end has their most strength using their Body and Hands to support the chair. with the rear wheels Lifted off the Edge bring back one step then repeat for every step. Try it on a smaller steps 3 or so you will feel more comfortable and the person in the chair will never lean forward to fall out and drag you with them if it was the other way. You must at all time use your Body to support the chair while you move downward and one step at a time. for wider stairs 2 or 3 people can be used. for 2 people one holds the handles and lift the other hold the frame near the feet and Lift then one step at a time go down. NEVER hold on parts that can easily come off such as Grip handle or foot rest etc. The direct Frame is the strongest. I have been transporting people in wheelchairs for over 20 years in Australia. Wheelchair Accessible Taxis. Trained by professionals and certified. Hope this can help you! always test this on small steps. and make absolute sure that Obstructions on the stairs if any are removed such as toys etc.. and stair is Dry. no spills on it like water oil etc.. before proceeding.
