Except for his ballet "The Seasons" - for the most part, unfairly, Glazunov/Glazounov is treated at the Rodney Dangerfield of late romantic Russian composers. Not to me. For the most part as a lyric composer of symphonies I think he is a genius.
recommend reading Elizabeth Wilson's biog Shostakovich: a Life Remembered ... it's a "can't put down" book ... about one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century, but a portrait of a great man, a true mensch
hello, are you available in discord, whatsapp or other social media? i would really like to talk with you about opera singers, you have a great taste, you post a lot of my favourites like Josef von Manowarda !
Aaron Rosand was going to do this recording with Bernstein and the NY Phil, but Stern threw a hissy fit and made all sorts of threats to Bernstein. The orchestra didn't mind, because Stern needed to learn the piece and some of that resulted in a lot of takes. That said, there is some nice music-making on this tape!
Although Varady avoided the most heroic of Wagner heroines on stage she sings here one of the most memorable Liebestods that I have yet experienced. A artist for the ages.
This is perhaps the only recording by Karajan that I really enjoy! But don't forget young Herbert von Karajan in those years had to compete with the one and only Wilhelm Furtwängler! (As great as this recording is I like Wilhelm Furtwängler's live recording of the re-opening in Bayreuth in 1951 even slightly better!) Herzlichsten Dank fürs Hochladen Addiobelpassato!
Where are the final bells? The bells are supposed to outlast the final orchestral cutoff! This is clearly indicated in the score, yet most conductors ignore it. Listen to Cluytens- the composer supervised those sessions.
I thought a scene of Zermat in Swiss when I listened 2nd Bruch violin concerto. 1st Bruch concerto is diffic ult to play because a solist mistake s former part of 1mov for wildly playing or resorting as a bachelor.
Thank you for uploading this beautiful, more extensive version of Giuditta. It contains arias I had never heard before. We're so lucky to be able to hear recordings which were made years ago, preserving these artists' voices for the future. I did have to keep adjusting the volume, as the high points were often louder than I could let it play without disturbing my neighbours. I don't use earphones, as wonderful as they are, they're also hard on the eardrums and I've managed to keep my hearing excellent into my 72nd year. I hope the young people won't lose their hearing due to listening to everything at such high volume. These heavenly melodies of yesteryear are a balm to my heart and soul. I've sung along with Lehar operettas since I was a little girl in Vienna, and my love for them has only increased. I'm grateful to Jonas Kaufmann for bringing back some of these Evergreens and imbuing them with new life! Thank God for beautiful music!
The emotional directness and intensity of Puccini's melody; its immediacy and power to captivate audiences is already apparent in this wonderful early work !!!! That grand theme, briefly expressed instrumentally in the opening "Prelude" and around 29:35 - 30:48 is so uplifting and beautiful, especially as it is taken up by the upper strings !! It returns triumphantly, climactically, sung late in the opera, 56:30 - 57:45.
Listen at 41:08 to the tutti quavers, just before all the repeated Ebs, modern scores do no reflect this. You only here this in old or original recordings. Was there a revision? A printing error that was never corrected and has been normalised now?
