Very informative. Thank you. I am a kayak fisherman on the Great lakes fishing for very large king salmon. Everything in your video makes sense. However, there is no way in God's green earth that I would be stacking to go after King's salmon. Those lines would get tangled like nobody's business.
Glad you liked the video! I actually started kayak fishing on the north shore of Lake Superior. It was the only way I could fish and get off the lake quickly when the weather got bad in a hurry! I agree about the stacking… It’s not easy to keep the lines untangled with most fish 😉
Great little seminar! Don't forget to deduct any expenses occured from that 1099 on your 1040 C. That can be everything from your fishing lures to your boat loan😁
Actually, I haven’t noticed any difference in the kayak being tippy at all, and I use an 8 lb weight. Only thing I notice is a bit of drag on the one side, so you need to counter steer just a little. 😁
I would think so too! I don’t use mine just to get deep, sometimes I use it just to get the lure to a specific depth. ( like over the top of submerged weed beds) 👍😁
Some do come with a track mount, but some do not. You can buy a separate track mount or you can mount the deck mount on the track using track mount bolts. You can se them in this video… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_H_-wEnJk-k.htmlsi=TCol-VNdIohecWPH
I don't know anything about trout, but for striper fishing and for bass fishing, if you stop quickly and then restart, it can help trigger a bit, especially if they're coming up on it and then all of a sudden it stops/slows and it hits them in the face, they just bite it... stripers/bass. Good luck. Did you ever make a video on how you made your underwater gopro rig? I'm looking for it now.
Hey thanks for the input. Trout are notorious followers, I have tried speeding up and slowing down, but I haven’t tried actually stopping. I will try it this season 😁 I haven’t done a video on how I made my underwater GoPro housing, but I will this season. I lost my housing and GoPro last year when I lowered it to 180’. I hade a corroded spot in my cable and it broke 🙄 I will be constructing a new one and I will film the process 😁 Thanks again ! 👍
Hey I’m just trying to decide on what hobie to go and tossing up the compass and the outback. I had liked the idea of car topping and was just wondering if the outback felt a lot heavier than the compass moving around or is it not too bad? Just since you’ve had both I was interested to get an opinion. Also how’s the standing stability compare? Cheers
Hey Clint, I originally bought the Compass because it was 20 lbs lighter and also less expensive. After I bought the outback, I found it didn’t seem much heavier than the Compass for cartopping. Also stability seems a bit better in the outback. I was really happy with the Compass and couldn’t think another model could be better, but I did find the Outback is a much better fishing platform because of the better seat, way more places to mount accessories and capable of steering on both sides of the kayak. For the type of fishing I do, ( big, deep water) the Outback works better for me 😁
@@WildEdgeOutdoors Thanks heaps for the reply mate. That’s great feedback and I think the outback or the compass sound great models but I reckon I’d be happier with the outback setup more. Thanks again for the feedback and I look forward to more clips from you 👍😀
This downrigger came with a mount made to screw down onto something, so I use a couple track nuts and attached it to the gear track using just 2 bolts and track nuts… amzn.to/3ERnIZm Let me know if this makes sense 😉
Yup, the lure action, the speed, changing directions, fish being active/hungry or not, fish being there or not, atmospheric pressure, water temp, visibility etc... all these have to align right and we have a strike, or else we have a nice day on the water washing lures 😅. Thank you for the video. I am in the process of making one of those housings. Used the same ABS reducer to house the camera, however i am not using the housing as the weight. I have a chain through the body of the housing, one end connects to the downrigger weight clip, the other has a clip that connects to the weight. That way I can change weights as needed and the body of the housing therefore is shorter.
Glad you liked the video! That’s a good idea with the chain… I lowered my camera down to 180’ just to see if it would pick up anything, went to reel it up and the downrigger cable broke🙄 Spent 3 hours trying to snag the cable. Lost everything! I’m now in the process of building a new housing 😉
@@WildEdgeOutdoors Sorry to hear about your loss, but consider it an opportunity to build an even better one. Was your cable steel or braid like mine?. I like the quietness and thinner diameter of the braid but it doesn't give me the same confidence as my old steel cable for some reason.
@@IcecyOutdoors my old cable was steel. I bought the downrigger used and never checked the condition of all of the cable.🙄 It was corroded at the part that didn’t get used much… I switched to braid also 👍😁
@@WildEdgeOutdoors The mount that you have in this video isn’t the one that is on the Scotty pictured on the Amazon link you provided. You have a different kind of post Mount in the video. The Brocraft rigger has the same kind of Mount that’s on the Scotty on Amazon.
@@user-ph4cg2bn5q I think I see… I used a Scotty track mount instead of the one that came with the downrigger… www.amazon.com/dp/B009JAZW6O/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_NE5J6W7J4XD9RVZ5CG54?linkCode=ml2&tag=weo03-20 Is this what you’re talking about?
Good video. I am switching to all 80-100# braided line for my kayak rigger setup. I have been running a downrigger from both a kayak and canoe for many years, recently becoming concerned about the danger of getting the ball hung up on the bottom in rough conditions, or in the event of flipping, getting tangled in that cable. I might lose a ball or two but it's a small price to pay.
Shop vac and soap suds also work well on breathable waders. For repairs I favor E6000 adhesive over Aquaseal. It's thinner, easier to apply, sets quicker, and doesn't go bad in the tube once it's been opened.
Thanks for the tips on the downriggers. 25+ years ago I installed one on my single seat Bucks Bag pontoon and it really opened the high altitude mountain reservoir fishing. I just installed a Brocraft on my Hobie Compass today but now I fish Lake Michigan for Salmon as opposed to Kokanee and Lake Trout in the 90's in Colorado. One thing I noticed using the hand cranked downriggers was the strikes I'd get raising and lowering the ball. I've never really seen anyone talk about it on youtube, but varying that depth while trolling got me just as many strikes as zig-zagging! Thanks for the info!
The reason why you want at least an 1/8” inch from the transducer to the protective plate is to allow water flow under it, that’s according to the Hobie outback owner manual.
I love my 2023 Hobie compass in the orange camo. I've been an Oldtown guy. But I fell in love with that boat, when I could touch it and see it in person. The only thing I'm not a fan of is. The rudder. I sold my 1st j2 Bixpy to my buddy, he's happy lol. And I purchased the new J2 PP 768 Bixpy, with twice the power, but I have to purchase the power pole adapter for the Hobie, because of the rudder. I also did my hatches, just as you did. The seat is also my other complaint. But now with these boats, you can change anything. I actually have a small pool noodle, in my seat, it'll resolve that bar issue. But I can walk all over her bow to stern, she's fast, love the fin drive. I'm 5ft 7 158 lbs so it's a perfect, and stable, boat. With all my add-ons, electronics, lights, just love the kayak. 😎 🎣 🛶
I’m not surprised how much you enjoy the Compass! What is it about the rudder you don’t like? And they changed the seat (I think in 2022) thought that bar in the tailbone was fixed???
When I got to Florida, I bought a bucket and a battery operated air pump. Worked quite well! I left the bucket there, but brought the pump home with me on the plane. 😁
I would contact garmin and tell them which transducer you have. They should now which nose protector you will need. Their customer service is very good in my experience 😁
I would try putting marine grease in knuckle and I think the backing plate is supposed to be on the inside of the kayak not on outside and hobie says never let sit except on correct rack and boondox says never store kayak on wheels and never drive with wheels hooked to kayak they need to be removed
Yes, you are correct on all of this. (Although I do have the backing plate inside the kayak, the one you can see is to level out the slope of the top of the kayak) I learned all this by doing it wrong at first…😉 Hopefully others can learn from my mistakes and comments contributed by others😁👍
Thank you for sharing. I’ve tried using my downrigger on the SF coast for salmon. Let’s just say I had a mess on my hands. Thanks for showing the basics. I think I’ll have it down next time I go out!
I’m glad the video could help! I still get messed up with it once in a while when I’m stacking 2 lines… Can be frustrating, but keep with it 😁 This has become my favorite way to fish 😉
I have one of the kick stand models from Tide We, too. I am amazed at all the storage room it has. Seems to be well made. I have a little difficulty reaching back and unbuckling the seat while wearing the vest though it's supposed to be easy. Probably a lot easier for someone with a lot less mileage on him than I have on me. Overall, I think I am going to enjoy the vest and am thankful I no longer have to carry a turkey chair, too.
I can’t get to the seat buckles while wearing my vest either… Bad mobility in my shoulders 🙄 I always take it off and get it all leveled out first anyway 😁
Yes, macks are very good to eat. They are an oily fish, so they are very good for smoking and on the grill 👍 I think just about anytime is a good time to catch them. In the spring they move into very shallow water, so they can be caught near shore by casting spoons too. 😁
Nice video. Used to fish the same place the same way before all the netting. We used jointed quick fish tipped with bait. Would like to see more videos 👍
I'm glad you liked the video! The rods I'm using are Eagle Claw Featherlight - amzn.to/3XQK5oA They are very low cost and sensitive rods for Kokanee The reels are Daiwa Accudepth 17LC for some reason I'm having a hard time finding a link to the 17... They also make a 27LC which I also use... amzn.to/3EspJuY
