The Bermuda Race channel covers each biennial Newport Bermuda Race, gathering official and competitor-generated videos made before, during, and after the race. If you know of one we're missing, let us know!
Note to myself. Nine plus nine does not equal sixteen. We actually had seven crew on Ceilidh before the rescue - so the total number was correct. That said I NEVER want to race 350 miles with sixteen people on a 40 boat again!!!
Glad they're OK, sounds like they did the right things, and anything can happen to any kind of boat. But it does surprise me that people take spade rudder boats offshore and seem continually surprised when a collision has grave consequences.
Very informative. We need the start times and class sheets sooner as others mentioned. I’ll second the AIS on the finishes well. We finished at 2AM in the driving rain and it was very difficult to find the line. Thanks Frank for doing this session and thanks to the OA for sharing all of this great content on RU-vid!
So so sorry to hear about the loss of Alliance. But really great to hear that the sailing community (as always) will go out of their way to help one another!
Very, very impressive dialog provided by you both during this presentation. A reasonable conclusion is that the damage was irreparable and the loss of the boat was thus inevitable despite what sounds like optimal attempts at damage control. Then, the decisive actions to prepare both for a safe personnel transfer to the raft and for the rendezvous, involving many moving parts, indicate a clear and reliable chain of command. I recommend including this experience as part of safety at sea trainings and stress the importance of the pre-race/in-situ preparations and the critical roles players. A demonstration of true leadership and collaboration. Well done, and so glad you are all safe and and unhurt. A true success.
Well done Eric and Mary! Great job bringing everyone home - sorry to hear about Alliance but look forward to hearing about your future adventures as I’m sure you’ll return to sea.
Mary and Eric, So glad to learn you and your crew are safe. Your outstanding preparation, training, calmness, and clear lines of authority and communication made all the difference. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
To see that many sailboats in the east passage was fantastic. And to hear the sounds of the carbon fiber equipment as they strained when they tacked added to all the excitement. Good show it was. Hope we see more events back here . Safe passage to all . 👍
A big fan of Tim Kent, our friend from Mahwah NJ. He did the Around Alone and we assisted from a distance by invoking cruisers to be shore crew for him when needed.
Compressing the starts.... 20 - 25 boats x 45 ft x 2 = 1800-2250 feet req start line. All tacking against the current thru a tight passage. Plus hundred (s) of spectator and pleasure boats. Maybe rethink this one? 🤔
Beautiful! How do you tension the dyneema forestay? Does it route back down the mast to a winch? Brilliant way to reduce headsail with a roller fuler genny. I have a C&C Landfall with large roller furler genoa and have been trying to come up with a way to reduce to a 90 jib when the winds pick up. This seems like the way!
... I like the red "slickers" ... Why??? Highly visible and absorbs the suns heat !!! What colors do you not wear ??? Blue, or purple .... high visable orange, yellow or green are damn COLD!!! too
Thanks for the great interview of my boy! I have video of him at the helm of our Cal 24 at age 7, and him double handing it with his younger brother at ages 10 & 8. Sailing has always been in his blood. So proud of you, Z!
