How does the ASIAir work with the Wave mount in AltAz? The ASIAir to Az-GTi (alt-az, no wedge) is an epic fail. No matter which driver in the Air, no matter Wi-Fi or Eq-mod, you either go the wrong way, can never center, or cannot track. If you can verify the Wave’s work fully for plate-solve assisted, goto with tracking, in alt-az with the ASIAir I would appreciate it.
@SkyWatcherUSA
@SkyWatcherUSA 7 дней назад
We will have to look into this. Most imagers use an ASI Air in EQ mode so it does not come up that often.
@BirdFinder
@BirdFinder 7 дней назад
@@SkyWatcherUSA Thank you. I'm not imaging like this, this is for plate solved assisted visual while my EQ imaging setup does its thing. There are a number of threads about this issue in the zwo forum and it seems that zwo also thinks most people use the wedge, so alt-az is an afterthought. But the dual saddle Wave looks like it would be great for this application, especially for outreach, so I would love the upgrade if it worked well with the ASIAir in both EQ and AZ modes. Cheers and thanks.

What you demonstrated bypasses the cable management feature of the 150i mount. Why wouldn’t you connect the usb cable to the usb hub on the mount then connect the ASI Air to the usb port on the saddle? Also, can’t you connect the ASI Air to the mount via WiFi?
@JanosLenart
@JanosLenart 9 дней назад
Just my 2c. A WiFi connection is not as reliable as a wired connection. More convinient, yes.. I don't own an ASI Air, but someone reported that it does not work correctly via the DEC panel (saddle). The cable management in the 150i is not a powered USB hub, just a straight USB cable (which is good!), but it also means that cable lengths add up. That's 3 cables: - USB A->B cable to connect the mount board to the USB saddle uplink - USB cable interal to the mount - USB A->A to connect DEC panel USB to ASI Air (or whatever else) I have the feeling that this would work, but with nice short cables, probably not the stock ones.
@SkyWatcherUSA
@SkyWatcherUSA 8 дней назад
The point of the video is to keep it simple on connecting an ASI Air to the Wave mounts. Of course the management system on the saddle can help but we needed to keep this simple. As for WiFi, wireless connection is not a super stable thing when doing imaging, especially when at star parties with so many using WiFi devices.

Thanks! What’s the advantage of using an EQMod cable over a USB connection. I thought the EQMod connection into a hand controller port was a holdover from the days when Sky-Watcher mounts or hand controllers didn’t have USB ports. Does an EQMod connection use pulse guiding like a USB connection would? Or is it effectively the same as connecting via an ST-4 port, emulating pressing the hand controller’s direction buttons at the Guide rate. If the latter then that’s not preferred, as the common wisdom is that pulse guiding thru USB is far better than guiding thru an ST-4 port. I’ve never been clear why that should be the case, nor have I ever seen any difference in guide results. But everyone says pulse guiding is better! Cheers!
@JanosLenart
@JanosLenart 9 дней назад
There are some technical differences between the USB B port on a Skywatcher mount and the EQMod cable. These shouldn't matter, but in practice they do. Some details that might help: * Neither has anything to do with ST-4. The guide signals are digital in both cases, no difference in resolution, etc. * The USB-B port on the mount is using the Prolific driver * An EQMod cable is using FTDI driver * The 6/8 pin RJ style connector on the mount is a phyisically more secure connection than the USB B port, especially in the cold * Occasionally the USB B port on some mounts give connection errors. Could be related to the above point, but it is hard to debug because it happens rarely. Never happens with EQMod. * Depending on how many different USB devices you have connected to the host computer, it might be easier to differentiate a USB port with a specific driver. Prolific is more common, so you probably already have a few of them, making it slightly more difficult to match it up with a mount. Not really a problem on a modern Linux system. * There is a communication speed difference between the two ports (9600 vs. 115200 bps), but in practice this is irrelevant, because the traffic is minimal, regardless of what is happening. * You can only use the USB B port for upgrading the motor firmwares. * One important one: in the dark, if you ever attempt to the plug the USB B connection into the ST-4 port it will fry the mount. (Fits nicely!) So I prefer not to do that all.

The magnitude table doesn't list a 90mm aperture (the size of my current telescope). I'm considering buying a 120mm. Would that be a 1 magnitude jump? Thank you
@SkyWatcherUSA
@SkyWatcherUSA 11 дней назад
You can play with our Scope Wizard app to calculate all this. But to assist, a 90mm has a limiting magnitude of 12.25. A 120mm is 12.87. For a full magnitude jump you would need to get a 140mm (13.21) although a 150mm would be easier to find. Hope this helps.

Hi, a few questions for you if you have a bit of time: - you mentioned that you flew with a Wave 100 and an Esprit 100. What do you think of that combo for imaging? - regarding the tripod, is there any other option than the carbon fiber one at the moment (ignoring the future steel tripod / the eq6 pier)? Like can I mount a Wave 100 on a star adventurer or eqm35 pro tripod ? - as of satellite tracking, can it be continuous or is it limited to leap frog tracking? Thanks a lot!
@SkyWatcherUSA
@SkyWatcherUSA 11 дней назад
The Esprit 100 and Wave 100 work well together but you would want the counter weight and a loaded Esprit 100 is very close to the weight limit of the Wave 100 w/o a weight. You can use any tripod with a 3/8 thread, so any pro photo tripod or the Star Adventurer tripod. The EQM-35 will not work because of the metal azimuth adjustment pin casted onto the top plate. For satellite, we don't have enough info. to answer that at the moment. It might be best to email us so we can pass it along to the engineering team to provide more details on this questions.

Hi, I've just seen this great video and have a pair of AZ-GTis already. About the Freedom Find feature, I tried this whilst the mount was tracking an object and got a sound of grinding gears when re-tightening the clutches - is that normal? To clarify, I used GOTO to find and track the object, untightened the two clutches, pointed the scope to a different part of the sky, and retightened the clutches.The last part making the temporary graunching sound (gears re-meshing?). I've kind of asked this question on the internet and with the seller and didn't get concrete answers. Is it OK to use Freedom Find whilst an object is being tracked (the sound discourages me from using it again) or should it only be used when not tracking (i.e. gears not in motion)? Many thanks for any comment.
@SkyWatcherUSA
@SkyWatcherUSA 15 дней назад
Usually we set the clutches just tight enough to engage the gearing but loose enough to where it gives easily. What could likely be happening is that the gears are just reengaging. These also use servo motors over steppers so you are likely hearing all the gearing inside engage at once. If there are ever any issues please let us know.

Generally everyone is very willing to share the views through their scope. A quick note for anyone that is thinking of attending. Registration fills up pretty quick so if you are even thinking about it - make the commitment and come. Although the event was officially starts on the Thursday of the new moon in August, many people camp there permanently, or head up in days preceding the event. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Hamilton Centre folks typically head up on the Monday and make a week of it. I love discounted gear so I’d be remiss if I didn’t plug the swap meet that happens on the Saturday. I’ve seen a steady increase in the quality of used, reasonably priced gear! Definitely a highlight! In fact, I picked up some goodies for our Centre this year. Next time please come find one of the Hamilton Centre people and we’ll get you up to the eyepiece of our 36” Dob.
