You know ships don’t use steam for their horns anymore? They haven’t used steam in decades since ships don’t run on steam. Most horns are pneumatic or electric, especially on a cruise ship
Very interesting. Have heard that experienced Captains seldom rang Stop during manouvering instead either Stand By (Dead slow ahead) or Finished by engines (Dead slow astern) indicating which direction most likely next order to speed up response. Stand by only used at sea and Finished by engines often communicated via phone.
3 survived the final cull 1 became a hotel 1became a sort of university/conference thing 1 i dont really know however. aside from the hotel the others have since been destroyed. something happened with the uni one-ss inkilap- and it was reconfigured then destroyed. the one that became a hotel. i think sadly lost its engines. it closed as a hotel this year and was towed to istanbul recently for conversion to a museum. still no idea about the 3rd one. in addition there was until recently at least one of the in between ones-ss ulev. survived at a marina until the marina was redone about 3 years ago and the ship was destroyed. and one of the really old ones was serving as a restaurant but i have lost where. i hope its still there.
If only one of my teachers would have shown me the operation of the Stephenson linkage of a work of art like this one, I would have understood the purpose of geometry.
You watch the people starting stationary steam engines and it takes them 10+ minutes to get it going. This engine however is fascinating, they can start and stop it at will and even reverse it, also at will!
I sailed on an old cable ship. JW Mackay, with similar engines. Although I was a steward, I often went down below to watch it all working. Amazing engines.
What a beautifully smooth running engine, like music, firing the boiler always looks so simple..it is an art,and cleaning it it is hard and skilled work..Roly 🇬🇧.
There was/is an old wooden ship which ran aground on ANEGADA REEF in the BVI,all was left was the CAPSTAIN.
