I love my A-760 Natural Sound Amp from 1981ish - bought it cheap due to the phono stage needing a rebuild - which I Never needed since i run a Crown IC150A pre-amp into the Amp. The Crown is a very excellent pre-amp - it has a channel reverse knob, mono blender unique features and all discreet design the most sparkling hi frequency knob I've ever heard.

I have an AX-596. The MM phono stage also has an RIAA curve +- 0.5dB and is very quiet. It's the best amp I ever owned, and the built in Phono isn't bad either. My Turntable cartridge definitely likes it.

Sometimes youtube recommendations are scary. 👀 I just got two Queen cassettes and they just stop spinning or get caught for a split second before spinning back again. I was thinking of typing in the search box 'How to fix an old cassette tape' but soon as I scrolled down, your video showed up. Now I'm thinking of opening the cassette itself and spray the silicone spray directly at it. Do you think it is a good idea? Then again thank you for the tutorial!
@GaryKeepItSimple
@GaryKeepItSimple 8 часов назад
There is no need to open the cassette. You can get the lube in through the gaps. Taking a music cassette apart is not easy because they are normally sonic welded or glued. The shell is never the same again if it survives. Re-gluing is a tricky job.(Been there done that). Remember you are trying to rescue a tape that will not play and is only good for the trash. It is worthwhile trying the lube but do not add to your problems. Unless it fails to work.

It is a totally capable machine. It is full remote control .auto stop and the noise level is comparable with 80/90 cassette decks. It is type 2 and type 1. It can record 2 tapes at one time and the replay noise reduction is Dolby b compatable. It has pitch control and external mic input. It also has usb output. If you compare it to a 80s deck for the same features it would cost a lot more. A run of the mill deck allow for inflation would cost over £1200 so £450 is a good price. You could cut the lawn and control the deck from the garden! lol. It is not a new dragon killer but if you put it up against an original not referbished dragon. The Teac would probably be better.. certainly cheaper to run . I have a couple of videos Which are replaying music. Have a listen and you can decide. (No noise reduction was used. To appease the purists.) the NR on this deck is 10db over floor.

I just got back into VHS, and i think i may have made a mistake. I didn't realize that moldy tape was an issue until I found a copy of forbidden planet that was covered. Foolishly, I fast forward it and rewound it to see if it would play, afterwards I read on the internet that that was a really bad idea and that probably ruined my VCR. Did I ruin that VCR, how do I address moldy tapes? Just found your channel, it looks very helpful!

As we are discussing something that is obviously subject to interpretation I shall try and quantify my Answer. If your machine is currently working. No harm done. If it is producing a snowy or white noise screen on a good tape, some remedial work needs to be done. If the Mould was big lumps then it would be a good idea to try and remove the lumps from inside the machine. If it was just staining on the spools, Just run a head cleaner or do a manual head and guides clean. That should be all that is needed. It would be OK to vacuum any dust out of the machine but just be careful not to bash or bend ANY of the tape path. ( a hair dryer may be a good source of "Blow" to get the dust out.) If you keep the VCR in a warmish DRY place, then you have got it good. If it is stored damp then mould may be a problem. BUT remember Mould is all around us all the time. That is how the tape got mouldy in the first place. EG. Sour dough Bread is made using the Mould that is floating in the Air. In future it would be better to check for mould and if the tape is worth the time you can remove the mould using Isopropyl alcohol and cloth etc. It is worth remembering any Tape can have mould and if you are having problems playing a tape the symptoms of mould are:- Head clogging, Miss tracking, and tape Jamming. It is the Lubricant that allows the tape to stack and run smoothly, that is the food for the mould and so the Mould need not be visible to cause problems. Did the tape you had the mould on play OK after you REW FF it? I always advocate FF REW all cassettes, Audio and Video before trying to use them properly. Better to fail on REW than on Play. The mess is less and the damage done is less should the tape fail. IF you need to manually clean the heads be careful. Never scrub up and down only ever gently side to side. Use plenty of IP Alcohol on the heads but do not splash it around the machine. I hope this has been of help. Let me know how you get on. Thanks for your attention.

@@GaryKeepItSimple Thank you for your response, that is very helpful! Unfortunately, the original moldy tape didn't play well on rewatch, but I did buy a dry head cleaner and used it on the machine afterword. I used your FF REW technique on an older star wars tape and it made a huge difference. The VCR is currently stored inside my home and is generally dry and temp controlled environment. I recently purchased a CRT TV and set it up with the Orien VCR in my parlor, so I think it will be ok. I'll blow it out with a hairdryer as well and keep an eye for the symptoms you described.

The dullness often comes because of dolby: dolby requires the levels of sound to stay exact the same from record to play. But the degradation in chrome tapes lowers the tape sensitivity, so you record with dolby on at maximum 0 dB (in a deck which has not level calibration) in replay maybe the level is 2-3 dB lower and the dolby decoding is tricked, reducing highs. Also if the deck has calibration there will be problems anyway because records in real chrome tapes lose 1-2 dB uniformly in all audio band in a couple of years (Basf engineers knew it), also if well stored, so if recorded with dolby playing after years the highs get dull because decoder finds lower level. A phenomen which is minimal on ferrics and not present in metals, so chrome dioxid has proven not to be a stable formulation over time. Japanese won the race: cobalt doped ferric tapes are noisier but takes more level, are stable over time and record well in all machines.

I bought this tape recorder a year ago and I sincerely regret it. It is not worth that much, the plastic it is made of is shoddy, it is suitable for a cheap coffee machine, the drawers open like old steel doors, all the buttons are devoid of softness, there is no Dolby. The power switch appears to be from another device (tractor). I have an old DENON DRM 540, an ordinary one from the bottom shelf, unfortunately I have to replace the head, but it is superior to TEAC in every respect. I bought it because I wanted a new one and it has USB, I actually have an interface and a mixer, so I can do without USB - which, by the way, only works in one direction... To sum up - I do not recommend it!

Useful info, but I did notice you got the label wet. This doesn't have to be a problem, but not all labels respond well to this. Some will get bubbly, others will get discoloration. Also, immersing the record in water can damage the record, because some 78's (most Columbia's, Harmony's and Okeh's) have a cardboard core, and if those get really wet they swell up and cause lamination cracks in the records. Also, you may want to use more towels or cloths. Now you put a dirty record on a cloth, you clean it, and then you put the clean record back on the dirty cloth to dry it, and transferring some dirt back onto the record. Finally, you should NEVER use water to clean Edison Diamond Discs.

None of my 78s had labels that had problems. I take your point, I have to assume not everything needs explaining in the video. Since you’re clearly an expert, I’d like to kindly ask if there’s anything specific about BASF Chrome cassettes that could explain an inherent frequency dip at 10 kHz, regardless of the source of the recorded music. Additionally, I was wondering if BASF Chrome cassettes retain any traces of the original recording after being re-recorded over. In other words, if a spectrogram analysis is performed, could traces of the deeper layer (older recording, or perhaps music from the other side of the tape) appear in the spectrogram as a frequency dip that isn’t present in the current recording? Many thanks.
@GaryKeepItSimple
@GaryKeepItSimple 25 дней назад
Some BASF Chrome has allegedly degraded and so do not record correctly on the Type 2 bias setting. So with that in mind, It would be possible for new recordings to not record full spectrum and for old recordings to not fully erase. Having said that the example I saw had reacted to a lower bias level better. The machine used was set to type 1 bias and then adjusted to maximum on the manual settings giving somewhere between the normal for the settings. type 1 is 100% type 2 is 150% so this was not type 2 - adjustment, it was type 1 + adjustment. Having said that they are degrading I would suggest that you pre-erase any BASF chrome. With a Blank do a test recording to see if it is OK. The Blanks I have tried have all produced Excellent recordings at Standard Type 2 bias. I hope that Helps. ( It is impossible to drive over 0db very effectively on the BASF Chrome. They just will not go. So do not try and you should get good results on a good tape)

@1991AF 25 дней назад
@@GaryKeepItSimple Thank you very much for your detailed response. Just to clarify, when it comes to remnants of previous recordings on a Chrome tape, is it possible for these traces to manifest as frequency dips rather than peaks in a spectrogram analysis? The reason I ask is that while peaks can be easier to justify as residual noise from an old recording, I'm finding it harder to explain the presence of a frequency dip (specifically around 10 kHz) if it were due to residual audio. Your insights on this would be greatly appreciated.
@GaryKeepItSimple
@GaryKeepItSimple 25 дней назад
As we are talking about something that is decomposing. The results must be theoretical. Something I have found on some brands of tapes is a dip around 10K Hz which when looked at turned out to be a phase shift. If the track was examined as a single signal IE left channel it looked fine. Then I looked at the Right channel it looked fine, mix them together as a mono output and the dip was there. It happens on some, not all tapes and I can see no real reason for it other than to say it was more often on "cheap" tapes than expensive ones. Like all these things that is a trend, not a rule. I have chosen not to go down that rabbit hole as yet. The effect on the playback as far as your ears are concerned using headphones is zero. I know it is not the machine I use because I always use the same machine and setup.

@GaryKeepItSimple
@GaryKeepItSimple 27 дней назад
It is analogue because the signals are analogue. No, if you slow it down it will mute the sound. The sound is on an FM modulated carrier. If you watch my video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EHhRfR81bEM.html it will show you all you need to know about Audio cassette decks. However. Just to quickly explain. Tape can be North or South magnetised. (Poles of a magnet) the strength of the magnetism gives different-sized output voltages. So on tape, all you need to do is pass an electromagnet over the tape at a constant speed and feed the magnet with Signal. Exactly the same as we send to a speaker. That will work. But it will not sound good. So DC bias was invented. it sounds better (BAD But Better). Then AC bias was developed. That is explained in my video above. In short, all the signals, big, small, HF and LF are put on the tape. and easily read back by a cassette deck. (or any tape player). So to VHS Hi-Fi. An FM carrier is just a signal. it is a specific frequency until modulated and the Audio signal causes the frequency to vary with the amplitude of the audio signal. Loud is more deviation, quiet is less deviation. The VHS heads can record video signals up to around 3 Mhz. The HIFI track is well below that so they put it on the tape as an FM carrier wave and when the tape is replayed they separate the FM sound carrier off in one direction and the Video signal off in a different direction. (Filtered by frequency, like tuning a radio) so then the Hi-FI audio is replayed by the machine in the same way as a good FM receiver would deal with the signal. The Picture information is not a problem to the sound and the sound is not a problem to the picture. The biggest problem with VHS Hi-Fi is Tracking. If the tape is stretched or curled the tracking will be difficult. On the picture this will show as a snowy picture, the Hi-Fi sound will go hissy and the Machine will mute the Sound. This will then unmute and re-mute whilst the tracking error persists. When this is happening most machines will play the liner track and you will hear Lo-Fi sound and chopping noise. That is why it is better to use SP not LP or EP for recording. LP and EP is much harder to track and the tapes will not keep very well. However, the sound quality on a GOOD TRACKING LP or EP or even EEP will be just as good as on SP. I hope that helps. Happy to continue if you want. Cheers
