Sorry I might be wrong but I decided that the 90 grain is viable for certain situations so I loaded some up. Mostly if I need to be extra cautious about people and over penetration in terms of taking away the barrier defeating effect mostly but I keep 4 mags on my belt for work with either 124 or 147 hst or whatever tbh as lomg as the their 124 to 147 and decent hollow points i keep 3 mags of 90 grain xtp loaded with unique lol but thats the type of things that only makes sense for really particular situations... they all kill well but if you imagine a small cabin cqb type situation I can see the need for barrier penetrating but I can also see the need for flash bangs and 90 grain bullets that essentially explode apart inside the person case after even a cotton shirt that takes an in on the penetrating but that means the 90 grain is exploding inside the dude which is good but also bot what hollow points are exactly meant for lol... just something I've been fooling around with.
I would like to see some expansion tests done at a little further distances, something a little closer to hunting distances say 25 yards. Good video by the way.
Great video. Lots of information here. I load XTP’s in both 9mm & 357sig, so I’m going to have to say that you just saved me a lot of time. Thank you Sir! 👍
Would have driven the final loads of the 115 and 124 about 50 fps faster as they could handle it. All of these have really consistent expansion at .55 and good penetration
I will keep this in mind for when I test how they perform at +P, +P+ and Major. I agree, the 115s and 124s seemed as though they could handle more. Perhaps I should test them further. Who wants to see them (124s and 147s) at Major pressures?
Also you need some water jugs or something behind the gel to capture over penetrating loads. Based on the slowmo gel it looked like they barely had any speed left
In defense of the 147s, they appear to have a consistent expansion past 1050 fps and the over penetration was still likely 0.6" just going deeper. I'd default to the 147s at 1050 fps + over the 115s here to ensure penetration especially if there's potential barriers because it seems like a more rounded all purpose load.
I did notice one of the bullets exiting the block, which means they weren't going very fast at that point. I think I'm going to revisit the 147s with a second block. Thanks for the feedback!
Those all did significantly better than I thought they would. Based on this, the 147s seem to be the best buy for performance I can think of among the bulk JHP. Seriously, at the same level or better than gold dots / HST and beat out XTPs and other names that cost nearly twice as much at least on bare gel. Good video, it looks like the 147s could probably handle carbine velocities well.
