You did a really good job with this!! Answered a bunch of questions I had specifically with the Speed Clip! I'm so surprised stainless isn't really visible overall on a quick retrieve... mind blown!! Great job!
Baitcasters have been easy, -coordinated adaptable thumb- since shimano magnetic control introduced ?40 years ago. But I’m doing worse than ever-multiple rods reels and line weights. Ugh
@@anglermattoutdoors I’ve been using bait casters for 30 or 40 years so if I don’t have it down now, I probably never will. But I’m interested in constant improvement and really appreciate any help. I think the line had too much memory, maybe it was sitting on the shelf for a couple years before I bought it. And I put too much on the damn spool. Plus I grew up on relatively short fast, action rods, 5 foot 6 was my go to for close quarters. Now you can hardly find a good bass rod under 6 foot 10. I also tend to try some fancy side arm garbage when I should be straight casting over my head, and light rigs not into the wind! I favor 12 pound test of the most expensive and well reviewed line I can find. A sucker born every minute…
@@pat6888 casting reels will offer you a little better accuracy and will also handle heavier line and lures better than spinning. Also in general, a casting reel picks up less like per handle turn so you can slow down a retrieve easier.
So…this video just popped up on my feed (yes, I’ve searched for stuff like this recently), but I have to say, the way you explain everything is fantastic. Simple and easy for beginners such as myself to understand. I hope your channel blows up man. (In a good way) God bless! 🍻
yea the smaller the diameter the better its going to cast. braid is the best for casting also because it doesnt have that tackiness that mono and fluoro have. Fluoro is better casting that mono because its thinner as well.
Yeah my biggest problem is using my thumb i think lol. Im pressing to hard on the line before the cast is complete almost pulling the jig or whatever lure back from my own thumb tension. But if i dont use my thumb it will lash anys. I have tension all the way up pretty much and the brake up too so idk its either me or this cheap lews classic i got 😅
Could just be a practice thing that you will get better at but I will say baitcasters are different than spinning reels in that there is a big difference between the cheaper stuff and the nicer reels. Because the reel itself aids in casting, you will have a much different experience. The spool tension knob and the brakes don’t make as big of a difference when tweaking them on the cheaper reels. The spool just doesn’t spin and freely and smooth as the nicer stuff does
Sorry about your issues. Lew’s make very good reels. I would continue with the videos. Read the directions. Sometimes reading jogs your memory of a small thing which is causing the problem.
It went pretty smooth, I caught a striped bass. No backlash or nothing. I did have a bit of trouble casting far but I think I had the wrong lure weight. I got a medium heavy 7ft rod, 3/8 - 1 1/2 oz with 12 lb line.
I'll use snap clips for most lures, except jigs. I agree that clips don't affect the action much if at all, but having the direct line connection to the jig helps with identifying more subtle bites and gives a somewhat better hookset. If you're fishing for toothy species of fish, having the snap clip may offer some advantages as the fish may not bite through the line as often when you're getting those "corner mouth" hooksets.
I just want to add something else that’s not in the video. I know most people think it’s the weight of the clip that will impact the lures action, so I got my wife’s kitchen scale out to see how much it weighs and the clips weight wouldn’t even register on the scale. It just said 0 grams. Obviously the clip still weighs more than a loop knot but that clip is super light.
clip seems to add a lot of weight to the front of the bait relative to the setup with the weedless fluke. it dives a lot more quickly the second you stop your action.
I was thinking that when looking at the fast retrieve with the jerk shad but I think I might have added more pauses with the clip on. Either way it definitely might add more dive.
Great video. I have been of the exact same mindset with using the speed clips sometimes but wondering if they made a difference. I will tell you that I haven't noticed a difference when catching fish but my mind always wants to tell me that the weight and visual difference would make not using them better. As a matter of fact, I usually take three rods out with me on my Solo Skiff and the last time I went I only took two. One had a traditional loop knot and the other had a speed clip on it. I caught a redfish on a Z-Man Kickin Crabz with the speed clip and didn't catch anything on a ned shrimpz with just a loop knot. After watching your video I think the only time I will really not use the speed clip is when they are super spooky and you really need a finesse rig for them. Thanks for doing this test.
Thanks for the comment! I was a bit surprised from the footage, I have mainly used the clips for paddletails because I thought the action would be a little off with the other lures but now I’ll probably start using them more. I love that it saves leader and mainline too. I’m with you though on the small slow moving finesse stuff I’ll stick to loop knots just in case 👍🏼
Thanks for the info 🎣 this video would have served me well had I watched it yesterday before I went out fishing at sea for yellowtails . Pretty badass hectic experience but now hooked lol . About to tie a 3oz sinker to a tld star I have laying around and practice casting 🤙🏾
