You hit that nail right on the head about Billy Joe. I met him a few times in Lukenbach man just sitting there listening to him talk tell stories then seeing him play will be forever in my mind how I wish I had a cell phone back then to capture those moments, he truly was a bad ass hard living, simple man, and he would tell you what he thinks no matter who you were how much money you had or how much fame you had it didn’t make a rats ass to Billy Joe. It really hit me hard when we lost his son Eddie man that kid could play. I could only imagine if he was still alive to this day, I always wondered what it would have been like if him and Stevie Ray collaborated on an album together
I saw Waylon at We Fest in 1988. He played before Willie, and we thought they would sing a duet, but Waylon announced they couldn't, do to record contracts. So, on Waylon's last song he imitated Willie's part and Willie opened with the same song and imitated Waylon's part.
For the record Waylon was not a drinker at any point in his wild days. Drugs yes, booze not, he says I believe in his book that he didn’t like the out of control feeling drinking provides.
@@eclecticmusica I identify as a Texan. To be a bad ass is to be a fool. Nothing cool about being a badass. Texans shouldn’t idolize anything bad. It’s not cool. This Willie guy sings through his nose but does a good job and better than I could ever do. But he isn’t my hero. Good guy I’m sure. But he ain’t no hero. So ya it’s weird how he’s being touted as one. No offense dude. Peace.
Your content is right up my alley man.. every bit of it. I had to screenshot a picture here, as I’m currently drinking a Lone Star light and my 5th great grandmother Sarah DeWitt made the “Come and Take it” flag in Gonzales in 1835. Much Obliged for your content, and I will see at a book signing soon.
I was there 95-97. I was living in San Marcos at the time and frequented Luckenbach often, got to know Jimmy Lee, Vellanne and Marge pretty well, they just weren’t sure what to make of this fresh faced 22 year old kid, who picked guitar, drank too much and stayed too late sometimes. After a few weeks Jimmy Lee and Vellanne made me an honorary member of the club, with the handle Dieter from Oslo. I stayed many a nights at the Goat Farm, only to wake up to 100 degree heat hungover and an hour or so from home. Great memories! I even made the Luckenbach moon once.
I'm sure we ran into each other more than once. I was there often from 1994-1997, then I moved to Southeast Texas for a couple years. When I returned to San Angelo in 1999, I picked up where I left off.
I was there! This is the first time Waylon had ever been to Luckenbach. 1995 Ray Price and Willie closed out the show by covering many of their songs and their album San Antonio Rose. The next year… yeah it was hot as hell, I had to borrow scissors from Sheriff Marge, so my buddy could cut off his pant legs.
Missed BJS in '73 but drove down with 3 other crazy Arizona bros from Dallas in '77 for Willy's 4th of July picnic in Gonzales. 3 days of non-stop chaos and the best country, outlaw music with Leon, Kris, Willy, Waylon, and friends, etc, etc..... There was a big reservoir pond next to the venue so there was no shortage of mud and skinny dipping, and of course that long, long hike across the dry dirt fields to get to the music. A once in a life time experience. One of our extremely, toasted amigos even made it over the 2 fences and past security backstage, and had the privilege of being an unwelcome guest in the talents portable toilets relieving himself in the stale next to Leons.
That's awesome. The second chapter in my book is about the Gonzales Picnic in '76. Got plenty of people who told me a lot of the same thing -- minus getting to pee next to Leon Russell.
Look forward to it... It really was an awesome 4th, with a great line-up. Memory fails me now, (and then due to a severe "Lone Star' high) so I hope you can refresh it. P.S. As the story goes, Leon came into that multi-stall shiter, sat down next to my buddy, said a few cool words then relieved himself of more then pee, got up, said adios and left in the middle of the night. Thats about as up-front and personal as you can get with ones idol.@@DaveDaltonThomas
