The only way to thrive in a rapidly changing world is to change with it. We know that. But the biggest barrier is in our heads. Neuroscientist and entrepreneur BEAU LOTTO shows why adapting - moving from A to B - means first moving from A to not-A. We need to let go of the assumptions and beliefs that keep us from seeing the world differently. A world-renowned expert in the science of perception, Beau reveals why trading certainty for doubt increases our capacity to adapt, lead, innovate, and thrive in the darkness of “I don’t know.”
So your definition of play would include an element of competition? When you say that to “play well is hard, look at an Olympic athlete”, the athlete is motivated by a sense of competition, as well… or?
Maybe psychedelics are like the transformative technologies that let you see and go places you've never gone before. But this was awesome, thx. It's pretty unbelievable this topic is so overlooked, the amazing malleable workings of how we see life. The world would benefit greatly from understanding it.
I've just recently discovered you, I wonder what you think about psychedelics. Like dmt. People seem to quickly have drastic shifts in perception, that usually only come from some profound life experience or over time. Say an addict, who after taking Ayahuasca perceives the drug completely different than before, and in a way that benefits them. They didn't have to hit rock bottom to learn a lesson, to "see", they just got to see things from a more beneficial perspective, and it stuck, as if they shortcut their way to hardwiring a new perception.
Uhmm.. we need to see more lectures like this. I love CS50 (lectures from a harvard professor tho I know nothing about programming but he started from introduction so I was still following) I hope there's free lectures from you (such as introduction to neuroscience - all the classes that cover it) thank you
Thanks for your interesting videos Beau, they show useful clues for understanding how our mind works. After seeing this video I want to recommend you to render again the spinning diamond using a parallel projection instead of a perspective projection. While it is possible to perceive the diamond spinning in both senses because the perspective is not very forced, the use of a perspective projection induces to perceive as “natural” only one of the spinning senses (since segments are longer when they are close to the observer in perspective projection). The use of a parallel projection will facilitate the perception of both spinning senses the next time you make this test.
Would like to see more about how leaders lead into uncertainty. (Is that the same as creating a vision and focusing energy toward that vision …instead of getting distracted by the problems?)
It is a challenge indeed to experience this very moment without bringing the past data into play. Thank you for the very important work you are doing to help us challenge the delusions. I very much appreciate how your work is helping me ‘know less’ and see more.
This video is nothing special. But you sir are amazing. I look forward to more 1-4 minute inspirational and mind opening videos. Please have more children. The world needs more people like you.
Beau, I love your videos, thoughts, and insight. Keep up the great work. You share a lot of phenomenal information that can help so many of us grow and see the world in a lot different and beautiful perspectives. I look forward to watching all of your videos.
"Seeing qualities in others is a way of integrating across diversity" thank you for this pearl and so many others. Very helpful in recognising what me and a bunch of others have unknowingly been doing in a variety of we-spaces over the last four years. Btw, I am wondering, did you do a video or write about 'collective Spaces of Possibility'.... about team like or vocational co-creative 'we-spaces of possibility'? If so would you care to share a link?
I've just shared your 'I'm your sandbar' theory. It stuck with, & resonated, so deeply when I sat in this audience & witnessed this. So grateful for you opening my eyes.
