I am college professor for a large multi-campus private university in Fl. I hold 2 master’s degrees & basically a third. I love understanding people’s actions in the marketplace, thus degrees in Psyc, Bus and almost Econo (no time to do paper for this Master's).

I have created class videos for my classes and due to hurricanes where I live, I post my lectures on RU-vid to make it easier for students. To my surprise people from other colleges like them as well. With the increase in on-line learning I have found many classes do not have on-line lectures! These will help you.

I can't tell you what textbook I am using, but all come from major publishers. Remember, these were made for my classes, I will refer to things you do not have access to like study guides. Also, some lectures will have lecture codes, ignore them.

I am not a professional video creator, nor speaker, as such these are not slick video - no animated characters, but these will help you pass your class!

For Principle 3, don't a lot of people spend their money on things they don't really get that much value out of over the benefit of making other economic decisions? Like for instance, people may choose to ration their life saving medication in order to pay a bill. In the end, the life saving medication is more important, but it's rationed because they need to pay the phone bill for instance. The cost of a life has to be considered more important than paying a phone bill. You may seek lower priced phone bills but that isn't always a possibility to the point of offsetting rationing. Sometimes (seems often), the cost of a life is disregarded or downplayed when making economic decisions. Not all decisions are economically rational, from what I understand. Externalities is a great example as well.
@rjbirmingham
@rjbirmingham Месяц назад
You give a great example of marginal decision making. First, let me say that 3 is based on the concept that the majority of people within an economy are rational thinkers. Individuals are not always, but in Econ we are examine the masses. Second, the principal is about the margins, and marginal decision making. The margin is the edge. In your case the person is on the edge of a resource (money) and must decide between two things (phone bill vs pill). At the moment of decision making, using their scares resource to maintain the benefits of having a phone becomes the more rational decision than using it for the pills. This is because they are not dying at that moment. They can justify putting off buying the pill till another day due to the fact that not having a phone has an instant, noticeable, effect on their life, not having the pill does not. This is often a decision seniors must make toward the end of the year when Medicare coverage of their medications stops. They will forgo the medication for a month, or two, waiting for Jan to continue to have phone service. Pharmacies are very busy Jan 1 filling scrips. It should also be stated, that in this example the person does not believe they will die, or be dramatically harmed, not having the medication for a short-time. However, if they do then the phone will come second and the medication will come first. The rising cost of epi pens has shown that people will forgo many things to purchase the life sustaining medication. Finally, this example also looks at the difference between short-term and long-term decision making in terms of economics. A subject not touched on in depth in this course.
Месяц назад
@@rjbirmingham Thank you SO much for taking the time to respond to me with such a well studied answer. Very interesting point on the idea that rationing of medication is due to non-immediate effects, but generally people will go for the medication if they are dying or near immediate threat of dying, that makes sense to me. I also get that my example is an edge case. I also get that rationalizing is an attempt to make a reasoned decision regardless of it being true or not. Does economics address bad vs good decision making? I'm still learning so I'm excited to dive in further! Thanks again!!
@rjbirmingham
@rjbirmingham Месяц назад
the role of economic is not to judge decisions - it to assist in decision making - making it super simple (limit word count) there are two basic things that economics produces - either statements about how thing are currently in the economy (unemployment rate) or the effect of policy (if a milage tax is added) - we provide information to decision makers, which included the general public as they are the voters that decide which candidates, and amendments, they desire to support - as an example it came to vote to raise minimum wages in my state, as an economist my job would be to provide factual information relating to the effect of that policy - not decide if that policy was good or bad

No offence, but a theory is by far nothing thats been proven, the definition of a theory is a belief you WANT to prove, not one that has been, there is however a reason why science as a whole use theory and not something more exact, as it is literally impossible to completely prove a theory within most fields like psycology or astronomy and many other similar fields. What you say is proven, is basicly just what enough people have "accepted" and agreed to.
@rjbirmingham
@rjbirmingham Месяц назад
Please remember this is an introduction lecture to the topic, and not a deep graduate class were the debate you present would be discussed. You also are taking about the difference between a Law of Science versus a Theory. A Theory should change and adapt as new facts are discovered and brought into human knowledge. In psychology we have few "Laws" due to the changing nature of the human body and society. Moreover, in your Introduction to Psychology class you should have explored that something cannot be considered a theory unless it went though scientific rigger. Moreover, this lecture focuses on behaviors that fall between -1sd and +1sd, and not the abnormal. You will also heard that many people use the word Theory wrong, that what they are discussing is not a theory but a guess. They use the word Theory in a jargon context and not the formal scientific definition. I yell at talking heads on the TV who use the word incorrectly on a daily bases.

I just want to ask wouldn't it be dangerous to let a child watch a crime drama considering if the child has an anti-social tendency because he/she might be intrigued by how the police find difficulty catching the criminal?
@rjbirmingham
@rjbirmingham 2 месяца назад
There are several reasons that your question is reasonable but unanswerable. The primary reason is the generality of the word 'child'. Within psychology we must be specific to ensure that both the reader and speaker are thinking within the same criteria. For those who read this answer, what age is a 'child' in your brain? Moreover, is it a single year or a range? Is the person a male or a female? Did you define it based on biological status or a psychological status? The next issue would be what a 'crime drama' would be, and the level of violence demonstrated, discussed, or implied. I am not trying to avoid your question as much as it is not possible to answer specifically. What has been found is the higher the level of violence a person is exposed to, the higher the tolerance level for violence the person comes to accept. Meaning if you live a place where anti-social behavior is common, then viewing it on TV will not appear abnormal. Yet, if you live a location with low crime rate, viewing an even low level of crime (purse snatched) could influence an attitude.
@NathaliePenaredondo-q8g
@NathaliePenaredondo-q8g 2 месяца назад
Ohh is that so, then it will vary on the situation, gender and many other things . Thank you
@rjbirmingham
@rjbirmingham 2 месяца назад
@@NathaliePenaredondo-q8g Yes, those variables will be part of the criteria that need to be considered when examining the affects of a stimulus on an individuals behavioral reaction. You could also apply operant conditioning to this situation. Moreover, a tendency is not the same as an action. Several individuals I have met over the years who state they grew-up with anti-social tendency turned toward careers in crime prevention as they matured. Yet others have gone down the path and strengthened their beliefs, often sighting being with a social group that reflect these beliefs. FYI - Sociology studies have shown the power of your reference group when it come to anti-social behaviors.

Can someone tell me what euthanasia has to do with the development of humans?
@rjbirmingham

This chapter is about the end of life. Euthanasia is one way a life can end. Previous chapters talked about other ways life can end from accidents and illness. Developmental Psy is about a life span and death is the end of a life span. However, if you are only taking about the 'Development' of the human species then you need to turn to Anthropology for that is not the subject matter for Developmental Psy which looks at a life span (birth to death). I hope that helps and good question (my student have asked this same thing).

Bowlby was not a "new guy". He was the father of attachment theory which has changed the field of psychotherapy as a whole. Like many great thinkers, he had to fight to be heard, and it took a long time for his theory to be valued as it is now. He profoundly changed how we understand the human animal. His contribution is on the level, if not above, freud. Both Bowlby and Ainsworth. The ssp and still face are the most important psych experiments ever. I once heard sue johnson say that freud was looking in the wrong place (drives) vs bowlby (relationships). Our brains are "profoundly social". Bowlby essentially destroyed what the behaviorists said, which was let the baby cry it out - spare the rod, spoil the child. We are, first, dependent, emotion based creatures who thrive within the security of a loving bond.
@rjbirmingham

I meant new as in modern theorist, unlike Freud or Vygotsky that are older theorists - Bowlby built his theories with an understanding of the human brain that older theorist did not have due to their lack of brain scan technology. FYI - these videos are for a general course in life span development, and do not go deeply into any one person. They follow a popular textbook that is used for those required to development psychology, but are not planning a career in psychology such as teachers, nurses and other degree program.

@@Dd94949 One has to look at the whole of knowledge when looking historical - Bowlby build his work (which was the first of its kind) starting with a core knowledge that he gained from older facts and new learning - we all have a base of knowledge and that base is influenced by information that is known - Things such as PET scans have altered our knowledge thus the next generation theorist will have that knowledge to incorporate ( Bowlby died in 1990) - Bowlby father was a surgeon and at first Bowlby was going to become a medical doctor attending college for that field - he had an in-depth knowledge of the human anatomy (though he was not interested) - his college years were at Trinity College in Cambridge then went on to medical school - AFTER medical school he trains in psychiatry - he is 29 or 30 when he becomes a psychoanalyst - his base of knowledge was far more complete and complex than someone like Freud - it is his combined knowledge of multiple fields of study and his hands on work during WW2 that assist him in the creation of his theories - yes he is a modern theorist
