man this role really let sean schemnel's voice acting shine / edit: the part where wukong hesitates because he thinks it's kid makes my heart ache. he loves his adoptive human disciple so much ;-;
8:49 One thing that always interests me is that Wukong clearly isn't the best mentor,but you can see why he didn't go straight up to the fighting stuff (see Emperor's Wrath final battle).And MK's reaction to his lessons is the same as Wukong's when Patriarch Subodhi tried to teach him stuff: Wukong not wanting to learn anything if doesn't have to do with immortality,while MK basically wanting to be a superhero.And interestingly you can interpret both wants has something in common: the selfishness in having an immense power,but at the same time,the urge to be the hero,the saviour of their loved ones. Sometimes I feel like Wukong is really exasperated facing someone who is almost the same as younger him. I wonder the ending where Wukong still decided to teach MK is a callback to how he was kicked out by Subodhi (and for a good reason,he kept showing off to the other disciples as you can see in season 4 special where he shapeshifted to a turtle),so he decides to gove the kid that has the same shortcomings as him another chance.
I love at 6:20 when he’s about to bring up the BUDDHA and how he absolutely slapped Wukong around like a child but the dude shuts him down like “Don’t bring up the mountain. My nose is already starting to itch just thinking about it.”
@shiloh2735 Iirc in the book, SWK got trapped under a mountain after failing the challenge given by the Buddha SWK was absolutely bodying the Celestial Realm until the Buddha interfered, SWK will bear no consequences if he was able to jump from the Buddha's palm (he failed since the Buddha IS the universe so no matter how far he jumped he'll still be on that palm lmao)
0:51 an adorable father-son moment. Wukong asks where his staff is and MK cries to him and apologizing him that he let them take it. But Wukong didn't got rageful or angry at the kid , you can clearly see he has some father figure on his heart. And i appreciate it .
*i love how Sean Schemmel can go from a goofy carefree personality while also being strict and discipline. Kind of like a father somebody never experienced before. Just using that as reference or an example.*
This guy got a bad habit undermining big problems with jokes,really.It's like he forgot he can't be everywhere and do everything to back MK up.An overall bad team player,in short. I'm glad he actually apologised about it.
What I love about Wukongs character is that as much as he can be immature, childish, or even kinda rude sometimes, he’ll always protect those he loves and cares about. Macaque even said that a long time ago, he wouldn’t shook a whole mountain to beat him, but just because he had a soft spot for MK, his only focus was getting him out alive. Even when they faced lady bone demon at the last episode of season 2, he grabbed MK and booked it instead of being reckless. Yes he realized he was no match for her then, but he still cared more about keeping MK safe.
Wukong's character development is actually insane.From a powerful demon that makes himself everybody's problem to a hero.He actually learned to be more mindful about his power usage.This dude doesn't just know how to literally *break* mountains,he can carry two biggest ones while running and turn into a giant monster version of himself and wreck everything (probably why he was the only one being kinda chill about MK's rampage shows that he knows how it feels),but he didn't.Instead,he tries to find other ways to defeat her (and from what Macaque did,I'm guessing it's to avoid killing the host) by searching for more info via interrogation & investigating.He only fights LBD alone with full intent to kill as a last resort when his messily crafted plan gets botched. He's such an interesting character,cause sometimes I wonder why he still acts like his younger,mischievous,arrogant self,but when others' life are at stake,he's got no self-preservation.He talks like he's the greatest but don't really act like it.He trashtalks and mocks but when it's serious,he'll be the straight man. Atleast...in my observation 🤔
Not really sure if the scenes from the calabash count since it was all an illusion, so not really Sun Wukong. Still crazy to think that the voice of Monkey King was Goku from DragonBall. I confess I wasn't into DragonBall and lost interest after a few seasons. But this is perfect. Definitely captures Wukong from the original Chinese tale. Also thought the show would be like Forbidden Kingdom where a boy finds the Staff of the Monkey King and has to return it to him.
He made a whole game with a lot of text and been show reading on several occasions, so he is definitely *not* illiterate. His spelling skills, though...
Love seeing their mentor/student or more father/son relationship. It does kinda seem like Wukong is a...tad...okay..Way possessive of MK when it comes to teaching him.
and well in season 4 in chapter 6 you can see for a second his mk origin and well even since he was born on a rock it is not yet known if sun wukong is his father as he was also born on a rock
When you live in an island that's mostly cut off from civilization, you'd need something to keep you from going insane lol- Not to mention the TV Show was probably made with him as an actor or something hence the lawyer-
