If you had titled this video something like "pest resistant houseplants", I would have found it so much earlier. Anyways. Lovely greetings from Berlin, Germany :)
Thank you for showing the reality of being a plant parent, I feel seen 😂 None of this 'woman in flowy maxi dress in posh house repotting while making absolutely zero mess' malarkey that you usually see on Instagram and we all know DOES NOT REALLY EXIST.
Hydrogen peroxide can sterilise the soil so it creates an environment without beneficial microbes - similar to how antibiotics do in humans. Neem oil can increase burning because oil helps the sun essentially cook the leaves. Both can be equally harmful and harmless. Don’t use them too often and don’t leave oil coated leaves in the sun and they won’t cause any harm at all. Tbh results vary from person to person - if there was a correct answer then plant care would be easy, but alas it’s never that easy.
@@planethouseplant I need to use them VERY regularly as I have thrips. I didn't get on with beneficial predatory bugs. With the neem oil spray I sprayed all plants in bathroom with no window. Left in there to dry overnight, to be sure as out of sun. Put back on windowsill in morning sun and leaves are burnt on several plants. Because oil doesn't come off after it's sprayed. If I rinsed down afterwards, water doesn't rinse off oil, so not sure how to go about this.
@@martinaharrisondefault5027another option is castile soap - you can use it every few days without damaging your plants. A lot of people in the US swear by systemic pesticides but they’re not easily available in the uk.
Oils can block pores, including neem, but if your plant is healthy it’s unlikely to make that much difference. There’s a lot of hysteria about things like leaf shine oils blocking stomata but whilst it’s not ideal, it’s unlikely to cause significant harm to a healthy plant
@planethouseplant thanks for this informative video. Can you mix neem and hydrogen with water for leaves? I think neem is cheaper and i don't have to worry about it going off like hydrogen with light?
I actually keep 50+ of my plants in water, and they are thriving. My Thai Constellation had root rot when I bought it, so I put it in a vase of water and a year later it grew 2 decent sized leaves. I made the mistake of propagating it too early, and it hasn't grown a new leaf in about 6 months now ;(
You are so right! I had a Dying Monstera Indoors, and decided to move it outdoors in East Sun, and she took a while to adapt but right now is doing great! I have another one that I got with water roots and I transferred to soil. The leaves are kind of droopy so I think I am going to move her outdoor too.
I looked on every single Lechuza reference to work out how to put the water meter together and it’s not shown anywhere! Thank you SO much for this, you’ve saved me an insane amount of time!!!! ❤
Thanks! This video is just what I was looking for! Someone who grows in water plus Java moss. Hardly anyone ever wants to do that, but I heard about it and it struck my fancy. I’ve been growing my Thai in water since I got her as a cutting. And she’s pushed out 3 leaves. But thanks, I shall try an air stone or pump perhaps and never thought of using my aquarium water for when I’m changing my fish tank water.
I love it but don’t make my mistake - the stem was in the water for years totally fine and then all of a sudden my entire house started to smell like drains - it was stem rot. I chopped off all the rot and it’s recovered perfectly but the SMELL. It was intense 😂 keep the stem out on the water!
Thanks for the info. I use API Tap Water Conditioner just coz of the Chloramine I also use a moisture meter, more accurate and cleaner than sticking my finger in to the compost, especially if I have a burst of Sciarid Flies (Fungus gnats) which are easy to control, by the way. 🙂
Dechlorinator is a great tip - I sometimes steal my boyfriend’s seachem prime but my plants don’t seem too fussed either way. I tend to under rather than over water so fungus gnats aren’t really an issue for me!
Finally, someone talking some sense. I live in South Wales and my house (average) is around 65% I have never been able to agree with the "plant sensationalism" but people keep saying the same stuff????? I think the Atlantic Ocean dictates the humidity in my house rather than a few little plants. I don't wish to antagonise people, but, I agree with you Thank you Jay
It’s the media preying on people that can’t afford to heat/ventilate their houses - add in a few hundred bots saying ‘this really works!!!’ and they get a tonne of clicks. Unfortunately, people like me saying boring things like ‘plants both add and absorb a very small amount of moisture’ won’t get nearly as much attention. It’s like misting - it doesn’t really do anything for plants, positive or negative, but that not what people want to hear!
Thats exactly what i tell everyone when watering peace lillys. Dont just water when the top of the soil.is dry. Especially when theyvhate wet feet aka being water logged. I always use my moisture meter and when there dry i water. I dont know where people get there info from lmao.
I just got mine recently, and it came to me very leggy. I chopped and propagated right away in water, and the roots are looking great after several weeks. I’ll probably wait a few more weeks to plant them altogether and put them on a small moss pole.
Good luck! I’m still trying to tame mine 😂 I regularly cut it right back to encourage shorter internodal spacing but it 100% grows however it wants. They’re so easy to care for but in return they want total autonomy over their shape (which is fair enough)
I have never had a high humidity problem in my house. Just the opposite! It’s so dry and I have at least 3 humidifiers going at once! The winter is especially dry and my peace lily still needs the water to bloom.
Last week I bought a Monstera Deliciosa and a large alocasia (missing a label so not sure which, very big leaves) and the nex5 day the leaves were dripping and I had no idea why. Now I do so thank you.
Hello, Up till now I used my Day One app to organize my plants with all kinds of tags. The disadvantage is that I don’t know how to set reminders for instance when to spray or clean my plants. The advantage is that I can make notes and add many pictures and I don’t have to pay for another app. Still I am going to investigate the others apps like Planta to see what I can learn from them! Thanks for the review! Cissy
Yes! A plant planner seems more like what many of us want, rather than a reminder. It would be nice to have somewhere to record when I last fertilised for example, but I don’t need a reminder (I mean, I do, but an app can’t know when I need to fertilise).
Thank you so much for the positive review! We are currently working with resellers to get more Kratiste climbing poles into the UK! We really appreciate your support for our products and mission :D
I use the general hydroponics flora series every other time I water. I don’t flush (though I probably should) and they’re thriving - tonnes of blooms too!
Your plants look a lot healthier than in your previous plant tours. Where did you get that potatoe pole from if i may ask? Nice collection and also very diverse with different plant families.
The light in my new house really suits them, plus I’m wfh so I can spend more time with them! I got the pole from my local garden centre but I believe the company (Kratiste) is based in the Netherlands but I’m not sure whether they’re available outside of Europe
Thanks! I water with either tap or aquarium water. I do sometimes check the pH but admittedly haven’t for a while. I think most of the issues stemmed from neglect tbh 😂
@@planethouseplant oh no! It’s a full time job keeping plants. I have 100+ and a big family to bring up. But my plants are my time! Well I hope you get them back to full health. I’m sure you will ❤️
How did this work out for you? My ZZ came in a pot similar to this but I dont know if I should use it because most people say to let the ZZ plant dry out between waterings.
I love my moisture meters. I’m not comfortable sticking my finger in dirt! Yuck! I have to use a nail brush to get the dirt from under my nails. So what if meters aren’t absolutely accurate? They give you a good enough idea!
I used to use one religiously for every plant and then stopped when I heard they weren’t accurate. I recently tried them again and they were…perfectly fine. I agreed with what they were saying! Perhaps we’re just lucky!
I love buying tiny plants! For whatever reason they often come in a "cactus mix".. That's why I transfer them to aroid soil into tiny see through joghurt cups.. 🍀
Currently the free version does allow you to edit and put in size of pot, type of pot, drainage, grow light, distance from window, soil type, size of plant, and set up a custom watering schedule. Did you ever do a more extensive review?
Oh really? That’s good, I’ll have to check it out. I found it so inaccurate (despite inputting all the data) that I stopped using it. I didn’t want to make one saying it was useless because loads of people LOVE it - it just didn’t work for me!
Finally! Someone that does the same as me. I also keep my Thai in water. She kept getting root rot. So I would wait so long to water that her roots would dry up and then she'd get root rot again! So this is the only way I can keep her happy. She is growing too!
