Your analysis is so thoughtful. You think about non-white people and really fit in the society, that's great. I hope you have a great taste in modern music too.👍
I got diagnosed with elhers-danlos syndrome last year and I have to go to the doctor this week to see what type I have and it's definitely been rough but I'm not losing hope
I wonder what John Waters thought of this movie. Mink Stole was one of his regulars. I thoroughly enjoyed But I'm a Cheerleader every time I've seen it. I came away with two things here. First, Rick was the gayest character in the movie. That's saying something when you have RuPaul. Mary was definitely closeted.
The way this episode was costructed is actually brilliant. As a viewer your not an allknowing spectator but you get as confused as the characters are. It always surprises me that everyone wants the answers on a platter while as a viewer you know that the answers will come eventually. I myself like the mistery. And if you don't know where the season's going ... the characters are confused about themselves also
I know this is literally from 2-3 years ago😭 But your friends insight about double negatives and white people being the grammar police was totally unexpected from a black american!! And they were absolutely right!! Black and brown people created our own dialect from being forced to speak English. And black people created AAVE. Also, white people being obsessed with "proper grammar" was a way, or actually still very much is, a way for white people to keep people of color as the underclass. Was used to deny us the right to vote, and now is used to deny us higher education and jobs unless we codeswitch.
"Why it's ok for him to do it but not them?" Because he was in prison with no ability to see a woman for 15 years, and was a sex crazed. He was on auto drive. And he stopped anyway when she protested and beat him. They, on the other hand, have her tied and might even kill him and her.
Loved this reaction and all your thoughts on the film!! I think you should check out the second film sometime. It's really good in my opinion and I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the film honestly!
It is disappointing to see so many people missing the point of Jan's story line. People wanted to put her in the "gay box" because she was different, androgynous and did not fit into every box they expect women to fit into. Now young people have the same mentality but with putting her in the "trans box" because she doesn't look like the typical woman. It is just extra disappointing when you think about how the whole message was about gender roles..
Never seen someone so willfully misunderstand every aspect of a film. Making huge judgements on characters while not paying attention to major plot information given in the movie. And the fact that you consistently hated Dae-Su while loving and praising Woo-jin to the end is just bizarre and creepy.
the word 'cluelessness' is invented for this kind, wonder how these people pass English class (where you have to write essays on literature) in school...reminds me of a former co-worker I had once who lamented 'this movie is so boring, who even dresses like that' after seeing 'LA Confidential'...goes to show how many of them are out there judging by +2K subscribers she has
The time period feeling off and not the 1990’s is on purpose. The 50’s and early 60’s pre cultural revolution& sexual revolution repressed culture of the 50’s and early 60’s is idealized by white Christian’s, homophobes and misogynists. The conversion camp leans hard into late 50’s early 60’s aesthetic and stereotyping to sell how dated and naive these conversion camps are. Also, the woman who played the cheerleader’s mom is a famous actress from the John Waters movies. John Waters made Baltimore based queer films in the 70’s with a distinct early 60’s aesthetic and she is styled in Hairspray era early 60’s attire to remind viewers who she is as well as reference the queer spoof film legend John Waters. This film is a big wet kiss to John Waters trying to bring his sensibilities to a 90’s film about a 90’s problem: conversion camps. I could probably do a whole term paper on this film but those are some important points for an elder millennial to point out to a gen z who may not know those connections. As for the camp head mistress she was the villain in the 1990’s Casper film.
The bigger issue with "grammar is racist" is that the LGBTQ community appropriated black language. Don't see anyone talking about that. Also, my root is being allowed to play boys toys and girls toys since my grandmother bought toys from the thrift store to resell at the flea market.
