I so desperately wanted J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) and Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) to run off together taking the girl, Katherine (Belinda Palmer), with them. And somehow they all three live happily ever after. Instead, we get, "Forget it, Jake! It's Chinatown." This is indeed a great film, maybe one of the best. Every scene is a work of art!
i just watched this movie a few days ago. it had been years. i was amazed, once again of how truly great it is. Every piece fits together and it is one of the very few, nearly perfect films.

I was 12 when I first heard this in 76 when it was on tv. Couldn’t find it in a record store. It was way before the internet. So magical hearing it now as an extended version.

I’ve heard quite a few covers of this song and it’s always so emotionally resonant, just a beautiful piece of music. It doesn’t matter who plays it, the notes still hold the same power.
Just read “The Big Goodbye”, a book about the making of “Chinatown.” Goldsmith was brought in at the last minute when the previous score was rejected. In ten days, Goldsmith completed and recorded the score that fits the movie perfectly. Genius.
