So i've got an igloo cooler its an old model and a cheap one too but its big anws so usually what i do is fill it up with ice the day before since i don't have a freezer and i also freeze 5-6 bottle of water. Next day i drain the water and i leave what's left of the icr to the bottom then i set up my bottles to each corner and the rest in the middle and boom i throw my shit in fill it up with ice and its good for 4 days

Guy lines and kids...dollar store pool noodles. Feed the guy lines through the bright pool noodle before staking down. It identifies guy lines and protects them if they fall on it. Craigslist is good for cheap, local gear! Need cheap way to cook? Use cast iron skillets and cook on the fire.

There was a country ballad written about him and recorded by Vernon Dalhart. "It may not be a sand cave in which we find our tomb, but in the bar of judgement, we too must meet our doom." -Vernon Dalhart

Yep, it was the first song to sell 2 million copies in the US I believe. There have been others recorded as well. The last one is a rock song by Black Stone Cherry called the ghost of Floyd Collins.

Jack, you guided us on the Historic Tour, 2022-03-31. My daughter was asking you questions about Floyd at the end of tour. Upon your suggestion, we went to the gift shop and relayed your message to Emily that she would be in trouble if she didn’t sell us a copy of “Trapped!” She rolled her eyes and the other girls in the shop got a good chuckle. :). Thanks for the excellent tour and book suggestion!

I’ve known about the Floyd Collins story for years, but your presentation was a pleasure to hear. Thanks! My 2nd great uncle was Augustus Ellison who had a home on Pigeon mountain, Walker county, Georgia. On his property is a cave named after him, Ellison’s cave. It seems to be very popular amongst the more experienced cavers from across the country. And no, I have never been and have no desire to do so. 😉
@jackthecaver763

Thanks for the nice comment. I am aware of Ellison’s. I’ve never been there but heard much about it. From what I hear it requires some big vertical drops. It’s very neat to meet someone with a connection there.

At what point are you referring to? Floyd was in the cave only a few months before his body was finally removed. There is a picture of Floyds body and the guys that got the body out. The photo shows Floyd and some guys kneeling behind him. But the cave temp in the 50s would have help preserve him. But by the time he was taken into Crystal he needed some work to make him presentable. This was done by using wax to repair his face and it wasn't done very well. There is a photo of him at that point and he dosent even look real

@@Empressinapastlife pictures of Floyd after being remove from the cave. I described 2 of those pictures in my last post. I did leave out 1 small detail. By the time Floyd was reached to remove his body it was noted that cave cricket had eaten part of his ear and noise. But I would think by the time of his 5th and final burial there wasn't much left of him

Floyd Collins’ and other early cave exploration pioneers' work was continued in he 1970s and later by cave exploration that linked several area caves to Mammoth Cave. The thrilling story of exploration is told in the book Beyond Mammoth Cave by James D Borden and Roger W Brucker; a captivating insight into cave exploration, which I highly recommend. With over 400 surveyed and mapped passages, Mammoth is the world’s largest, but the discovery of the connections was painstakingly slow and intensely laborious, requiring remarkable effort by determined cavers. The thirst for discovery that drove Floyd Collins is beautifully depicted in this first person narrative that cannot be put down once engaged.

Thanks for the comments. All of Brucker’s books about mammoth is great. The current length is 412 but more surveys have been done over the last year.

I would not go caving with you apart from lights batts the one that is essential is water and some food caving is hot physical and can be very dry. I always have 3 bars of kendal mint cake and 3 500ml emergency drinking water ration packs they are in a packet rather than bottle so they take up less room i also have extra pair socks. If you are stuck in cave injured your body uses more glucose faster

Thanks for the advice regarding coolers. I would add to the caving collective for cold climates remember that coolers can keep some items from freezing down to some temps that can be extended with hot water bottles to preserve glass canned goods or other things that you don’t want to freeze before you use them. Like my coffee creamer I get to carry it by the bottle because of my cooler sizing lol. But I keep it in the warm cooler to keep it from freezing. Having water that’s not a frozen rock comes in handy too.

I don't believe it because nobody that you can see and touch is unrecoverable use small drills make holes around him about ten inches away from his body put wedges in start breaking out the rock in double-fist sized chunks hell I could have got him out myself.

john harris Maybe not today but this happened in the 1920’s. To get to him, you would have to be hanging totally upside down and barely see his head. Maybe you can read the book for yourself. I only hit the highlights and did t get into all the details. Much more to the story.

Contact with Floyd was only maintained for a few days. The passage that Floyd was in was so tight he couldn't move his arm or kick the rock off that trapped him. The passage above him was reported to have squeezed shut. This can't happen in a normal cave. But this was not a normal cave. In fact it really wasn't a cave at all but rather a path that wounded around a jumble of rocks boulders and slabs of rocks. Miners did show up to help and tons of mining equipment was brought in but none of it could be used. The rescue was miss managed from the start. In fact the first real effort to get Floyd out didn't even start for a few days after he was found. It would be a completly different rescue if it happened today.
@scottnichols7811
@scottnichols7811 3 года назад
Umm yah. You could have done it yourself. You could have done what 20 people could not do. They did try "drills " and just about every form of tool you would use for mining. Most of the guys were miners coming from mines in KY. They couldn't get the equipment in the cave.

I had to smile when you mentioned that "old" Colman stove. I have one, just like it (with a propane adapter, too). I bought mine NEW back in the mid 1970's. :-) Along with 2 of the Colman camp fuel lanterns. Our first tent was a 2 person pup tent. I know what you mean about sleeping on the ground. We upgraded to cots when we upgraded to a 7 person tent (for 2 people!). BTW, I've always used the term "frugal" when it comes to spending money wisely. Good quality gear, easy on the budget, can come from yardsales and flea market/thrift stores. Thanks for sharing. God Bless.
