I'd say they followed the usual detail where some Cybertronians have the same body type. Like how Thundercracker and Skywarp look identical to Starscream. Or how vehicons look the same. Or how the Reflectors look identical. In the Siege cartoon they do this pretty well. Both Autobots and Decepticons have a lot of bots who look alike but have different colour palettes.
