Wondelful presentation! Is your D50 keybed broken or why do you use another keyboard to control it? The D50 blew me away when I tried in 1988. I especially liked the "Choral" sound using the Chase effect. I still remember sound nr.65 was a nice brass sound that sounded very dynamic as aftertouch could be used to change it from mellow to bright. But I ended up buying the D10 since it was multi-timbral. ----------------------------------- But why does the D50 sound better? Some say he A/D converters play a part, but I read the synth engine has two LFOs. The D10 could only use the LFO to modulate the vibrato. What does the extra LFO do on the D50? Sometimes the LFO can modulate the filter to open and close continuously, creating that ethereal sweeping sound. But unless using aftertouch, I don't hear that sound on the D50. They both use four elements/partials to make a sound. And the samples are mostly the same. So what makes the D50 sound better? ----------------------------------- Funnily enough, the string sound with the mix of a sampled attack and synth sustain made it hard to hear the attack sample and sometimes it sounded better with the synth element muted. This can be heard at the end of "Out of blue come green" by a-ha is in this clip.ru-vid.comUgkxBbZC-_mxpnMRFf8GsS_zLu_NXmpB-5vL?si=e2VIRK4GxmUSlBy_ Maybe they muted the sustain but I believe there was another version with just the attack on a sound card for the D50. ----------------------------------- It's ironic that back then the sampled snipets were the big thing but now the synth engine seems much more interesting as it can be tweaked in much greater detail. I always thought samplers are like cameras with their realism while synths are like having a full palette at your disposal. ----------------------------------- My favorite group a-ha used the D50 extensively on the song and album "Stay on these roads". Also, Jean Michel Jarre used it on "Revolutions". He used the presets as they were and I have learned that was the case with some sounds from "Zoolook" with the Fairlight. I had always thought that he tweaked and made his own sounds and felt disappointed to learn that wasn't always the case. ----------------------------------- Sad that the era of legendary synths and gear in general is over as people do everything on their computers nowadays.

Hi @chrismossy9774 Thanks for your reply I used a mother keyboard as it shows off the D-50 with much more expression - the D50 keyboard works fine D10 vs D50 - I think whilst they can potentially sound the same - because they are set up differently - you have to program differently to get the same sound. Also - I believe that some of the loops (digital native dance) are different too Lastly - I think the D50 has fx on that need to be disabled to get closer to the D10 Lastly - D10 is 32 note polyphonic - D50 is 16 note polyphonic Synth sample eliminated - yes - then it becomes more like a digital synth pre samples like a DX7 The sample snippets were revolutionary & now have been so superceded - they are now the charm of the D50 - likewise - the synth engine is an early version of digital analog synthesis “I always thought samplers are like cameras with their realism while synths are like having a full palette at your disposal.” Completely agree - a digital synth is a photo of an analog synth - for 1 second at one time. Analog synths change constantly - as the analog oscillators warm up & cool down - & work against each other. Synths like the Jupiter 4 & CS80 have individual voices that all sound different - & lastly - each CS80 sounds different to the next one. How can you copy that with a one time snap shot for your digital copy? The D50 is hard to program - but I did master it. Re the Era being over - that’s why I have this channel Thanks for feedback!

I saw the dry video first and this is just night and day. I actually remember playing the CS-80 in the 70's at music shops and trade shows. I was never impressed and thought that it sounded just Ok. But with a bit of reverb and eq, it really comes alive. I still think that a Montage or Kronos could copy these sounds pretty easily, but I see why the CS-80 was considered a classic. Incidentally, Blade Runner had a LOT of reverb. I think you could have added a bit more and it would have been closer to the original.

Funny you should say that but you are right. I think he meant that the attack should be softer both in terms of the volume (VCA) and filter (VCF). It sounded a bit too harsh to me as well. I also think the brass lick from "Chariots of Fire" would have benefited from such a setting with the use of aftertouch to gradually open the filter. I made a cover of that theme and know that the brass lick is a bit tricky to get right because each note varies the usage of the filter in slightly different ways. The filter must be controlled live via aftertouch if possible or by tweaking the filter controls. Simultaneously, the vibrato might sometimes be varied in a similar manner, at least for "Blade Runner". So all in all, volume, filter and vibrato are controlled at the same time which is very hard to do but you are lucky to be able to use the aftertouch to help you out here. The Danish Symphony Orchestra played the "Blade Runner" theme but the filter envelope setting was fixed so that the filter opened up the same for each note which made it sound bad and less smooth and dynamic. For both "Blade Runner" and "Chariots of Fire", the sound should imitate a brass instrument envelope. So, on the long notes, after the initial attack which should go from soft to a bit brighter quickly and the fall back to more mellow, the filter then opens again but later and more slowly than one the short notes. And then the filter closes at the end so that the sound is always moving or pulsating. When one plays this, one should think of the sound as a wind instrument and not just play it as a piano. Feel and shape the sound as if you were blowing wind into a trumpet or flute. This goes for all sounds on a keyboard. String sounds must be played with the phrasing and voicing of a real string orchestra to sound realistic. Same with guitar sounds and so on. One must know how the real instrument is played to emulate it well. I hope you might find my thoughts on this helpful.

Reverb is what air is for etheric oils and without sniffing on the bottle itself : this micro-drop scents needs to be spread out into space and combined with the air itself. Only in this way it gives literally oxygene to that scents which than can travels through the rooms. For me reverb is not an effect but something that is crusial embedded into and for every sound(design) itself as a sonic sculpture. Any sculpture needs a space to be put in and to reveal itself... This fact is also true for sonic sculptures. In reality, "dry sounds" don't exist, except in the world of sounddesign-synthesizer machines. For any performance it would be better to give it that... oxygene... Just a thought. But hey : don't get me wrong : very well reverse engineered re-sound-designed (on the level of the dry sound)! Awesome!

@@jaggass HI - I can give you a few pointers: 1 - CS80 has 16 individual oscillators with 16 individual signal paths - most synths (eg - Prophet 5 Rev 3, OB-8) us a chip (Curtis chip in the Prophet & OB-8) that has 10 oscillators & 16 oscillators in one chip meaning they all sound the same - & then they are processed as one. So the CS80 does literally sound like 16 individual voices. 2 - CS80 has 2 individual synths - synth 1 & synth 2 - so you can set them up as 2 different sounds - even the Jupiter 8 has both banks of oscillators going through one set of processing. 3 - the pitch bend strip is seen on very few other synths 4 - there is glissando & Portamento 5 - it has 5 LFOs for modulation routes (like the other CS synths) meaning it has much more flexibility for vibrato type effects - the Jupiter 8 has 2 & the prophet 5 has one - unless you use the 2nd bank of oscillators as a LFO 6 - Polyphonic After touch 7 - The best ever ring modulator 8 - Tremolo that speeds up like a real Leslie speaker There is more - but this is the main ones Thanks for watching!
