Friend of mine who bred reigned cow horse horses for about forty years told me something that has stuck with me over the years because it is soooo true and that is: "Good horses aren't cheap, and cheap horses aren't good".
Great question! I change and soak once a day. That way I can make sure my bandage is staying on but not rubbing. The goal is to soften the hoof enough for the abscess to travel out by keeping the hoof moist. As soon as it has a drainage tract the horse will feel better because the pressure is relieved. I like to soak a couple more days beyond that to continue to draw out the abscess. But not more than 5-7 days total because keeping the hoof wet for too long causes other problems. You may see some drainage or the hoof may have an odor from the abscess but your biggest indicator that the abscess is draining is the improvement in your horses soundness. I am not a vet so please consult one if needed. I hope this helps! Thanks for the question!
There are bitless... So bridles don't always have something in the horses mouth. But looking at a halter what i notice different is no brow band and no reins
Where was this video when I was just starting riding? This is the most helpful video about putting together a bridle I’ve ever seen! Very clear explanation and visuals!
Great Video! May I add a tip? Apparently they are doing Mustang sales/adoptions locally now. (The South in general, Raleigh specifically)…unlike adopting dogs and cats, these horses do need homes, but are absolutely NOT for everyone. Not for most, actually…If you don’t have experience with mustangs, in the best interest of human and horse, you should resist temptation. Only consider if you are VERY experienced with horses, have appropriate facilities, and are skilled in natural horsemanship techniques. I lived for two years on an Arab Farm in Nevada that was adjacent to BLM mustang land. I had the privilege of seeing these horses “in the wild” on an almost daily basis. I also saw the results when they were adopted by well meaning but unqualified individuals. It rarely ends well.
Great question! In this tutorial I leave the reins hanging up on the hook where the bridle is so they rest on the crown piece of the bridle. I hope this makes sense! Let me know if it's confusing. Thank you for commenting!
So happy to hear it works! I have a similar situation with my current all aluminum trailer. I bought a magnet that has an adhesive on the back and stuck that where I would want to stick my trailer camera. Hope this helps!
Bought my first trailer a few months ago and while most everything you mentions seems like common sense, I've learned that common sense is not so common. You mentioned a few things that definitely make sense. Question going back to your "trailer organization" video, where did you find your saddle racks? Did they come woth your trailer? Ive been looking for something like that. Great videos!
So glad you found the videos helpful and thank you for commenting and great question! Those came with my sundowner trailer. Sometimes trailer companies will sell those parts but I've had good luck with grid walls and saddle racks that go on those (plus the endless storage you get with the accessories as well). I'll find a link to some and post in another comment.
organizedbarn.com/ I've ordered from this company before but I think all gridwalls are pretty similar and you could order from anywhere but this could get you started. Hope this helps!
Suggestions for future videos… My farrier mentioned meeting a Masterson Method practitioner, giving me an excuse to buy yet another book. After reading just the first part, I got really curious because it just sounded too easy. I started working with the “recommended for beginners” bladder meridian. The theory (you probably know all this) is that you are working with your horse, not “on” your horse, helping them to release tension throughout their body. It gets way more specific and complicated, but just this simple bladder meridian release has had an amazing impact on Juliette. If you haven’t tried it, please do this…buy the book, and read enough to start experimenting with the bladder meridian release. PLEASE RECORD IT! I so wish I had, because it worked with Juliette EXACTLY as the book stated. She indicated places that needed release, and then she would indicate with yawns and chewing that the release was complete. I’d move on. By the time I finished one side, her head was lowered almost to the ground, and her lower lip was totally relaxed. It was bizarre. Now, I’d accepted the fact long ago that Juliette, (like my middle grandchild) just isn’t about nuzzles and pats. But since I’ve started just this basic stuff, she is actually trying to be a little bit affectionate. I swear, this Masterson method stuff is pretty amazing. I’d love to hear your input, and maybe an interview with a practitioner. Love your channel!
Love this! One of my former students in Texas is a Masterson practitioner and one of my current students just went through her certification and will do a session on my horse in the near future. I think it's so fascinating as well! I'll try to record with permission and interview as well. Thank you so much for the idea!
Tail up for these brushes!! (because after typing “4 hooves up” I decided that just isn’t the same as “two thumbs up” 😂😂😂) The curry is way cheaper at Pittsboro feed.
I have a neck issue i’m currently working through that tenses up my shoulder/upper back muscles, which leads to my arms being super stiff. Combined with a tendency to pull on the reins (unfortunately how I was originally taught to stop for years), I struggle with following/giving through my arms and hands. The driving rein is a great idea- i'm definitely going to try it out with my boy tomorrow, thank you!
I have an extremely opinionated mare. Somehow, I’ve managed not to include these tools in my stash. That shall be remedied immediately. Thanks bunches from “The Portly Princess” and yours truly, her personal minion.
It helps to soften the foot to make the abscess easier to drain 🙂 but you are correct! If a horse's hoof is kept too wet for too long that isn't great for them.
Great question! If that's the closest then you might have to give it a chance and see if it's doable. I have personally found that it is fine for a short time but that drive can wear on you after several months. With that being said there is one person where I work who drives an hour one way to get to the barn about 5 days a week. I asked her how she does it and she says she tries not to think too hard about it and uses it as her "me time" and generally listens to her favorite podcasts or audio books during the drive to make it better.
The keeping the reins in is weird. I was always told to wrap it around through the rein buckle so the reins will hang down. Also I hate figure 8ing the nosepiece as it can bend the leather and deform it a bit. I just keep it outside the bit like normal and just slide the nose band through the keepers. I know everyone is going to hate me for this but I always do the throatlatch buckled on the top hole to keep it all snug together.
Thank you so much for all these wonderful tips! I'm buying my 1st trailer on October 16th! 😊😊😊 I love these kind of videos since I'm really new at this.
When I was learning to be a dressage rider I was not allowed to hold the reins for six months, we were never let off the lunge until we learned how to ride and establish a proper seat!
Being lunged is a great way to improve your riding!I bet your hands and seat are 💯💯 I think the spanish riding school makes everyone stay on the lunge for quite some time as well. Thanks for commenting!
How long you need to keep doing this😮. The Farrier always makes a hole for the abscess to drain through and this obviously needs to be kept covered until such time as it's grown out. So how long with the (poultice and) bandages, to prevent debris and reinfection through the hole in the sole?
Great question. If the farrier has made a draining tract then just keeping the area clean and covered after its done draining should be sufficient. Soaking in warm water and Epsom salts provides inflammation relief as well as antimicrobial benefits and softens the foot for the abscess to make its own tract if a farrier doesn't do it for you. Ask your farrier how long you will need to keep it covered since it really depends on how deep they had to go. Hope this helps!
I don't think it does. Once you have downloaded the app that's all you need. It provides a wifi signal your phone connects to in order to view the picture from the camera.
