Good evening all you wonderful people of the internet, my name is Spatchy. I'm an advocate for right to repair and make videos about hardware repair and modification (in my own crazy sort of way). You'll also see me showcase the occasional software project I've created too, all my software is open source and can be found on my GitHub.
Been windows for a fair bit but I as your average case user am really interested in steam os. Windows as of late seems to have a tone of things I personally don't want. Just want a machine that runs games and browsers really well. So I can get the most out of my hardware. I personally feel like Linux is 90% there for me.
Hey, really enjoy the channel, small request - consider toning down the TV/YT 'mannerisms' and try to focus on speaking more clearly instead of quickly, otherwise you are doing a great job!
So as someone who has always been extremely hesitant to get off of the Windows OS because I've always seen Linux as inaccessable due to my lack of understanding of tech and software. Thankfully your simple explanation and breakdown made it easy to understand and see that it's worth taking the risk. One look at the desktop and I just *knew* that I would be very comfortable. Cheers!
I plan to move over to Ghost BSD. That said, Steam OS 3.0 is exciting news. I Just might make a duel booting system. Ghost BSD for my productivity stuff and Steam OS for my entertainment stuff.
So windows is thinking about closing its kernel... It will be a matter of time , that steamos or any other distro in the future that is open source to conquer (finaly) windows monopoly desktop domain... And i love it, it will take time yes, but microsoft is really digging its own grave
11:09 Another alternative to MS Office that mirrors its functionality and in many areas exceeds it is called - Open office, it is free, open source and available on all major platforms and has a strong community behind it for porting it to the lesser used and known systems.
I have hated the way windows has trodden.. So now, the first time in my life, I'm ready to commit hours and hours just to get my games working on linux. I don't care which distro, but I love Valve and I hear good things about Steam OS, so when windows 10 loses its security updates, I'm gonna plunge into Steam OS and stay there. If I can't get my games to work, then boohoo. Im' a bit mad- käy
Wine is responable for 95% of the work for running Windows Apps and Games on Linux/macOS. Proton adds a few more things. Don't get me wrong Steam is doing amazing work but 95% of the work is done by wine and crodewavers
I think it should be noted that there is no audio when streaming your gameplay on Discord with a Linux device (from my experience with my Steam Deck) as Discord does not really support their app on Linux.
Just booted my computer and got the message that windows 10 is going to be discontinued and my computer cant run Windows 11 (which is BS!) Started looking for alternatives and I really think this might be a viable one. Cheers for the vid!
Why are you bothering with Sunshine when Steam Remote Play works for gaming? Youre going to find the same problems you claim; lag? Ensure a wired connection
The only games I cant and will not play is games like Pokemon that needs internet to play with friends because im not a single player only maniac. I like to play games with my BF so Pokemon is one of those things. NOT UNLESS I was messing around with the game and seeing if I can break it by doing crazy stuff.
games like starfield, pso2:ngs and forza needs a more stable gpu clock use corectrl for it low clock 50-100mhz lower then high clock and its fixed if not install qt up proton for installing for each game difrent proton versions same like an steam but for all other games and too for steam
I created a couple of Windows virtual machines in Virtual Box for running my Windows software, and that solution works just fine for my particular needs. I have no intentions of ever going back to Windows. Very happy using Linux.
If and only if steam os is able to do VR, I will I switch, unfortunately oculus does not support windows. I don't even care that I use windows I'm just not down with all the spying and background processes it's a lot to tolerate
Valve needs to make all games work on Linux if they want to continue to thrive if they can discontinue Windows 7 then they can force everything to work on Linux as an option I personally think Valve doesn't like forcing people to upgrade and it's all the government. Really it's the FAA the reason why you can't play games on older Windows anymore which the government should have no authority to tell a company how to run a business if you don't know the FAA controls these companies no joke look it up.
Also after cloud strike. There is no reason to use kernel level root kits which can be updated remotely and Will brick your system if they get bad updates. Also most anti cheats are not review by third party security auditors. so who knows what code they are running behind the scene and how safe they are.
Linux, you have full control of everything you have on there, hell, even Microsoft use Linux to make Windows lol. Over the years, Linux slowly brought work arounds to get things to run, mainly because DirectX and a lot of fonts Microsoft have a copyright to, and thats the main reason why most games wouldn`t run on Linux, but Steam have been fantaststic for the Linux comunity, the reason is Steam Deck, it runs with Linux, and within months more and more games became Linux friendly using a program called Proton that lets you run games without DirectX. Ive not tried it myself because I use Linux Mint, but Steam OS is there all setup for steam games just to run. Microsoft snoop on everything you do, it slows connection speed and they sell the information, that is not done with Linux and most games run faster for me on Linux than they do on Windows. Dont get me wrong, I have my Windows key (fully legal) but if I had 2 computers, 1 with Windows and 1 with Linux, Id opt for Linux every time, Its safer as long as you only install legit Linux software, its way way faster to install. Everyone has their personal preferance, but I only have an OS to run the programs im interested in and Linux Mint does that for me in a faster, safer way. For thoes that dont know, Linux used to be Shell/CLI to install, but 90% of things now install like windows, If you worried Id start with Ubuntu or mint, as they are close to the way windows works, not identical but close, and there is a lot of infomation on sites like youtube for Ubuntu/Mint.
Thanks for this video friend! I just found out about Microsoft's coming plan to charge us for our Windows licenses until we upgrade to the new Windows. That's the last straw for me, it's bye-bye Windows for the foreseeable future. And this is in a household with 10 Windows PC's and Laptops! I used Ubuntu exclusively about 12 years ago, but went back to Windows only about a year later, for Gaming/Video Editing/Music Production tasks. This last year's experience I've had with the Steam Deck and it's Arch-Linux based OS has me actually excited to fully dive in. I'm still pissed at Microsoft, since I bought full-featured Windows 10 licenses only 3 years ago or so for all my devices, but I am excited to convert all my PC's to SteamOS for my first full venture into Linux in a long while.
cool video, i'm interested in how many games do you have and how many didn't work i have 308 games on steam + others gog ect, with the changes windows is going to bring in this year regarding customization of my system, Eg: classic explorer being stopped working , microsoft is getting to much.
You might have a better time if you try a more supported Linux desktop, such as Fedora. If you want a great gaming desktop with ease of setup, then check out Nobara. If you want a more SteamOS like experience, then Bazzite is the way to go. For the best hardware support, use an AMD GPU. Intel has the second best support. nVidia is getting there again with their newer drivers and the open source driver, Nouveau driver with NVK.
