I’m Shanna, a Canadian resident doctor in Calgary, Alberta. I release interviews with different med students, advice videos, and vlogs showing what med school and residency is like. I hope my videos provide helpful advice to med school applicants and inspire you to chase your dreams. All opinions and statements are my own. This video does not represent the official opinions of the University of Calgary or UBC Faculty of Medicine. I do not sit on any admissions committee.
hi, amazing video! one question- since you submitted your med school application at the beginning of your third year, did you graduate early or is that the traditional timeline for med school applications?
I don't know it anyone ginna see this but i hàve baen struggling to with this hearing loss on my left ear. Dont know if my right ear is affected. Am currently a year 4 medical student and have been treated badly coz of my hearing disability. I can't afford the hearing aids...
Hi Shanna, I’m going into my sophomore year and I want to become a RN. What do you wish you knew when you were in highschool about the medical program ?
I was accepted by Bachelor of Science (applied biology) does this matter when it comes to choosing a course? (Do i have to take certain courses to make it to 2nd year or med school in the future?)
Please am a high school graduate and currently doing my application process to UBC and I want to study medicine. I can’t see it at program choice aspect of the application, I only saw bachelor of science and bachelor of applied biology. Can you brief me on the bachelors that I need to choose in order to do medicine at UBC
You can’t apply to medicine straight from high school in Canada. You need to complete a Bachelor’s such as Bachelor of Science, before applying to medicine.
I personally did a Bachelors in Integrated Sciences but i have friends that did physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, kinesiology, biochemistry. No one degree is better than the others
love your video, people always said you need a sport for getting into UBC, is that true ?? Did you do any sport when you were in high school ? I am in my high school, planning to UBC, by the way which province are you in when you are in high school, I am in BC and reference your high school courses. Thank you so much
I really don't think it's required to have a sport to get in. I did do lots of sports in high school though including hockey, softball, track and field, swim team. I did high school in BC.
Did you start 2nd year as an int-sci major and then submit your proposal going into 3rd year? I'm about to go into 2nd year, but I don't have my proposal done, nor do I have a mentor. How will being an int-sci major work for me in 2nd year, given my degree plan doesn't actually exist? Should I make a mock proposal and choose my 2nd year courses based on that?
If you don’t need physics to apply or for DAT, then you wouldn’t necessarily need to do it. Physics was easier for me to get higher grades in than faculty of arts classes were, so if that is the same for you, it’s worth considerin
I paid for a practice CASPer test but I didn't pay for help with it. I did get medical students to give me feedback on essays and I thanked them with a tutoring fee or a starbucks giftcard. I personally offer essaying reviewing as well (there's a link) calendly.com/shannapremed/medschoolapplication?month=2023-03
Hi, thank you for your video. I have a request. My daughter is in grade 11 and wants to become a pharmacist. I am looking for chemistry test extra practice resources. Sometimes, her teacher teaches university level chemistry lessons and there are some tests related to those lessons. I would appreciate it if you could give me some information about good resources.
Hi Sara, From UBC Chem 121 I believe they used Chemistry 121: Integrated Resource Package (ChIRP). This might be a helpful website as well: www.chem.ubc.ca/gr11gr12-chemistry-review

I had taken pharmacology in my second year and so My ISCI mentor was a Honour Pharmacology faculty member. I previously interviewed for the honours pcth major but decided I didn’t want to do it, and in the process got to meet pcth faculty in the leadership positions
Hi, i hope u doing well. I am final year student in Tehran University of medical sciences. I am planning to have Canadian liscence exam. Would you please guide me? Thanks doc 😊
Hi Shanna! This is great and it's so awesome that you were able to pick an elective to practice your Cantonese & Mandarin. We're making Canadian medical school accessible to all Canadians. We're a team of medical students, residents, and staff who are committed to Canadian healthcare. I'd love to create something awesome together! - Jamie
Hi Videoath, I love what you do with the MMI. Unfortunately, I don't have time to provide MMI video review with how busy residency is, but let me know if you'd like to do a video collab on MMIs etc.
Hey thankeww for the wonderful video but as an international student can I opt for 2year diploma in associate of science and then further complete my undergrad degree in UBC so am I eligible for MCAT ?! And being an international student is it quite difficult to be doc in CANADA?!
From what I understand, you need to be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident to apply to med school. I don’t think there are any restrictions on who is allowed to write the MCAT though! I personally recommend doing your whole four year of your undergraduate degree at UBC if you are able to (acknowledging finances and other factors are limiting factors for many people).
Thank you so much for this video! I'm heading into my final year of undergrad with a lot of mixed feelings. I've really had to question what it is I want to pursue, and I found your discussion to be super insightful. I especially appreciate Amy's "tips for self-exploration," which I will definitely take with me. It's wonderful to hear about experiences from both perspectives (med school and grad school) while being reminded that "nothing is permanent." I've been feeling really pressured for time, but your conversation has encouraged me to stop limiting myself. (:
Do I need to complete all three sciences gr 11 to gr12? I've taken Chem 12 and Bio 12 but not Physics 12, and im worried this might bite me in the future I noticed on the biochemistry website that if I didn't complete Physics 12 I would need to take Phys 100 as a class. I don't know what this means to be honest 😭 would it be a great disadvantage if I didnt take Physics 12?
If you don't take physics 12, then you have to take the university equivalent of physics 12 which is phys 100 at UBC. If you're in Grade 12, you could consider taking Physics 12 in online summer school or the adult education centre over the summer - purely to save yourself the tuition costs of taking phys 100.
@@ShannaYeung Do we need to take physics in high school (grade 11,12) to be able to get in to UBC (DMD) or can we just take Biology and Chemistry 11,12 to get in to UBC (DMD)???
Hi Shanna, would you mind telling me how she found the mcat having not taken physics or how did she prepare being that she did not have the knowledge of them? thanks so much! AMAZING work :)
Im also an undergrad in neuro right now and this was so refreshing to hear as someone who is SO confused trying to choose between these paths. It's so helpful to hear about the pros and cons of both career choices from people who have dealt with it themselves and are happy with the decision they made. Thank you guys so much for making this!
Hi Shanna, thanks for the super informative video! Would it be possible to get the contact information if her as I am in a very similar position and would love to speak with her? Could you maybe ask if she would be willing to speak with someone who looks up to her?
Hi Drew, What particular question do you have for Gina? Gina does not use any social media so I would need to pass along a question to her. I would also recommend the other non-traditional videos on this channel such as Jill's journey (business) or Brandon's (music)
@@ShannaYeung I just so more wanted to talk to her about how she found it (the sciences) being a non science background and why she chose not to do physics:)
@@drewbogardi4550 From her uncut interview, I believe it was logistical hassle (e.g. she would have had to take a high school level physics to be able to take university physics , and physics is not required for UBC med at the time we applied).
@@ShannaYeung oh ok. Thanks so much for the reply. One last question. Is it possible I could get her email and maybe she would be willing to set up a zoom or phone call? It's just hard to find people in similar situations as mine.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! Answered so many questions I have as a current soph in undergraduate questioning if I should continue on the pre-med track or pursue something else with my neuro degree. Especially appreciate your discussion of science careers not in medicine or research as I didn’t even know I was not limited to those options
