Excellent video! Always nice to find a new channel. Signalis reminds me that i want to write my own cosmic horror, but make it as oblique as possible. Something like the main character is investigating an event on the fringes of some sort of cult ritual.
If you use the elevator key to go back up to the first floor you can meet Isa again for some more dialogue. Great series so far looking forward for the next part.
Not sure if this is a spoiler for you, but there's a document somewhere in the area before going into the elevator that explains wors being redacted in documents and around the facility. The elevator has the name also taped over as part of the protocol that was mentioned in said document, but it also makes you believe you can't get to that floor, but you totally can and for a cutscene, along with other useful stuff, as well. And, having played the game, I still don't know what the word was that they redacted out everywhere and it's been bugging me.
How love, how you capture essence in a game is so damn good! Go through so much dedication, thank you: I'm waiting for the next... (I didn't play that game due exams but I would like to know tragic friends like in anime: Seraph of the End.)
You should check out achtung cthulhu! It’s a pen and paper ttrpg similar to Dungeons and Dragons but uses the Fate Core system and gives you a fighting chance against the Cthulhu Mythos. It’s also has like a H*llboy or Indiana Jones vibe.
I've only watched Signalis (not a fan of horror and I have trouble sticking with nareative games) but i really like it. Though not as much as Bloodborne.
@@HipsterKaren once we get further into this game, I hope you’ll see why I disagree. Also, Prey is not cosmic horror, it’s not even considered a horror game by Arkane studios.
@@chrismeyers4836i dont think not understanding a thing about the lore is a fun addition to a game, i play a story driven game to live a fantastical story, otherwise i would play an multiplayer game or a game with no story at all like a survival, but hey, thats my personal opinion
That's kinda the point of cosmic horror. If you understand exactly whats happening, it has failed at being cosmic horror. If you've read King In Yellow, or are at least aware of the events and signs of the King In Yellow (how the cults are supernatural stuff works/looks like) then you almost immediately get an idea of what is happening here. If you haven't, then, well, you're in the same boat as most King In Yellow and other cosmic horror characters. The game does kinda of rely on you being aware of and knowing at least a bit about the stories it is drawing from.
These are great videos, but from these videos, I don't see the 'worlds best'. For me, I've only played (very little) darkwood and (1 Whole Run) of Alien Isolation, so I still have Alien Isolation as my Label as Best. It's probably really hard to extract the emotion through videos, so I hope to play this game someday.
Alien Isolation is not cosmic horror, but it is a good game. The adaptive AI in the game really forces you to mix up your gameplay, and it's a really solid title. But it's not cosmic horror, it's more generalised, and you can escape/fight back against the alien. But I do plan to cover Darkwood too!
I probably came up with a cosmic horror story, so deep in its mystery, in a game I once was ambitioned to build, it might've been the deepest cosmic horror.
To be entirely honest, I just find it unbelievable this would be anybody's first game. Not only because of how good it is, but because it absolutely pulls off an entire franchise's worth in world building.
Hi, the german is back! 3:05 Yep, that's a german poster. In-game translation is pretty accurate. 3:36 The replica is an 'Eule' unit, which means 'owl'. 4:07 The service object is a 'Mond & Töchter' High-Security Wall Safe, which translates to 'Moon & Daughters'. 4:43 On the left is a poster for the 'Eule' model which I already translated. In the bottom left tho it says 'Einfache universelle leichte replica', meaning 'Easy universal light replica'. 4:49 The poster says 'Together to victory against the empire' (guessing the german empire but what do I know). 4:52 Just confirming that yes that's german and yes that's an accurate translation. 7:38 I'm just gonna translate the whole thing here we go: Itou, Isa Personal Identifier: ITISLD-V-560524 Type: Gestalt (person/character) Homeworld: Rotfront (Redfront) Sector C *File access allowed* 8:47 As you might have guessed, the card says 'Classroom' in german on it. 10:10 'Storch' means 'stork' (another unit named after an animal), technically 'Protektors' is also german but it translates to 'protectors' so..- 11:14 At the end it says 'März' which means 'march'. Thought it was a name but it was written in march. 12:28 Again, german card with a good translation. 14:18 The door says 'Rotfront station 06' (and 'Attention' on the note). That's where Isa is from. Thought I should mention that. That should be it, tell me if I missed anything. I wrote this while watching and I don't have time to go over it again so some stuff might have resolved itself. Please tell me if this helped or anything, I'll likely continue translating everything when the next episode comes out. I think the game is mimicking germany because of all the german posters, but I don't know why they would be fighting against the german empire (the poster at 4:49). Also some of the translated stuff is useless but I tried not to keep anything out. See you in the next episode :)
To be clear, the Eusan regime is not Germany directly. There are German words, Japanese letters on the keyboards, and in some cases; Russian and Italian weaponry. Signalis doesn't even take place in our solar system, and I'll cover that in time. This comment and your effort is very much appreciated though. I've been busy over the last two weeks, so I'm only under halfway done to completing episode 3; but it'll be done when I've got my head back in the game. Thank you so much for your valuable attention <3
@@eggskenedict Interesting that so many languages are used. While I can't interpret anything, I'm happy to help with translating german in the next episode. Looking forward to it :D And thanks to you for making such amazing detailed and high-quality videos! :)
Hi, german here! 5:05 Yes, 'Elster' is the german word for 'magpie'. 5:40 I would translate 'Gestalt' here as 'person' or 'character', not 'shape' or 'form'. I googled it to see how you got that weird result and I have no idea what any of these results mean; it's a simple word as far as I know. 11:40 It speaks german and says 'Attention, Attention' and then reads the numbers out loud in german. I don't know why this game is trying to be german but I'm gonna go watch part 2 now :)
@@eggskenedict I considered that but I just really liked thinking about including this in the story, I know it's likely just poor translation but for me it's worth thinking about.
I would LOVE to see a full breakdown of the game, please take your time editing so you don't burn out but this is my first video of yours and I really like how you explain everything.
Very well put together video! I like the mix of gameplay, explanation, and interpretation in this. Reminds me of my first playthrough. Can't wait for the next one! PS: the background graphic at 4:40, are those Penrose tiles?
Really happy you’re enjoying it 😁 next one should be out in a week or so. No, those are pexel backgrounds but I picked them because they felt relevant. I kinda wish they were red and black but there’s only so much I can do 🤷🏻♂️
I played signalis a while back after it was added to Game Pass, and thank goodness I found this game by chance in Game Pass because it is wonderful game
I don't even have a Playstation but the physical copy is so sick. Ditto for the OST vinyl. I'd give my one criticism of the game but 1) it's optional 2) it's way into spoilers
Woah, damn, with this quality I simply just assumed you had hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Wasnt until you flashed your profile did I see the low number. The algorithm has blessed you and me both.
Such an incredible thing to say man, thank you. I’ve just started this part of my journey and I have a lot planned for it. If you could share my videos with someone you know will appreciate it, you’d be doing me a great favour. I hope to see you in my comments again 😄
Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but I think you’ve got the wrong takeaway from the game. The setting is obviously based around regimes of a similar setting, but it’s a backdrop. Not a political statement. Unfortunately, I know your type. So I know this reply won’t change your mind, but I do hope you can see it for what it is.
Dude the game was made by two East Germans. Who have a better understanding of good old "Sozialismus" in practice, both before and after the fall of the wall than you ever will. You have no Idea what the fuck you're talking about.
Clearly you don't understand King In Yellow. Framing that sort of Cosmic Horror requires an authoritarian fasicist state, or at least some sort of oppression of personal freedoms; because that is what the King In Yellow stands against. The King In Yellow represents freedom in is most primal state. The fact that often results in death and madness is just part in parcel with Cosmic Horror. Heck, the most famous part, the whole "Take Off Your Mask" thing, though often taken unfortunately literally by the cults driven mad by the request, is more about discarding the masks you wear around other people; shucking off the expectations of society, unchaining yourself from the repressions other people force upon you, and showing the world who you truely are. However, the cults keep doing that, seeking new masks to remove, until the only thing left is to remove the very flesh from their bones and bare their soul itself to the world, if only for a single glorious moment. So yeah, framing this from the POV of someone considered less than human in a sci-fi mix of N4z1 Germany and Soviet Russia just makes sense.
Signalis is good but personally it ain't the besy Cosmic Survival Horror out there, I'd give that award to dead space, especially its remake, and adding the lore of the brethren moons atop it only makes it all the more scary.
Of course, necromorphs are pretty good. But I’m not sure DS1/2 were cosmic horror. Definitely lovecraft adjacent, but it’s more sci-fi horror and body horror, but I have to say I don’t know anything about the brethren moons. Purely because I gave up about an hour into Dead Space 3. Still though, once this series is complete, I hope you can see my point of view!
@@eggskenedict So the breatheran moons are hyper intelligent creatures that cause a species to evolve and deplete a planets recources (like humans) who would then depend on a marker which generated infinite energy, and make more of it, eventually leading to convergence in which a new moon would be created. Basically theyre farmers, they grow a species only for said species to literally turn itself into a new moon, hell in ds3 its revealed that millions of other aliens fell for the exact same trick, and to make matters worse they launch a marker into a planet so that the marker will begin the farming process. It's one big trap that's nearly perfect in design, the only exceptions being the aliens that managed to freeze their planet over mid convergence, and humans who actually managed to escape our planet and not rely on the marker.
Yeah, DS kinda explained too much to be Cosmic Horror. The first game fits better, but the sequals are more sci-fi horror/body horror as you said and DS3 is Kaiju Horror (sometimes mistaken for Cosmic Horror, especially by people who don't understand Cosmic Horror, but it is its own thing).
@@marsphoenix1359 i disagree, I mean the idea that every race before our own has faced and fallen to the same cycle we go through now is cosmic horror, it heavily involves the ferme paradox in its narrative, and theres still the question of What happens after the moons? Is there a power higher THAN the moons?
Thanks man 😄 it all starts with passion. It can elevate your entire game once you know what it is you want to tell your audience. I don’t know if I’ll ever become a big RU-vidr, but I know I’ll keep making videos I’m passionate about and that’s what matters most 😁
I absolutely want a full video going in depth. There’s something magical about listening to people ramble about this game and getting their opinions on it.
